Monroe grew up in Beaumont and graduated from South Park High School. In 1942 he joined the United States Air Force. He joined the 47th bomber group as a gunner. Monroe flew the Southern Route to North Africa and flew 51 combat missions. He provided ground support in the invasion of Sicily and Italy. He was honorably discharged and returned home in 1945. Monroe married Janet Chesser in 1944 and had two daughters, Marcia and Janet Lynn. His wife Janet passed away in 1996. In 1999, Monroe married Helen Chesser.
Monroe was employed at Sun Oil Company for 40 years. He was a long time member of First Baptist Church of Bevil Oaks. He was also a member of 1320 Masonic Lodge of Beaumont, El Mina Shrine, and captain of the marching patrol. Many of you will remember him for his love of water skiing in the area, as well as his funny snow skiing and hot air ballooning. Monroe also loved to golf in the Beaumont area.
Monroe is survived by his wife, Helen Scurlock of Beaumont; daughters Marcia Head of Midlothian, Janet Lynn Garret of Florida, and Karen Mazzu and husband Tom of Fannett; and sister Dorothy Wallers of Mississippi. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom he adored..
A Gathering of Family and Friends for Monroe will be held Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at 1:00 PM at Forest Lawn Funeral Home. A Celebration of Monroe's life will occur Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at 2:00 PM, with his committal service to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
