Matthew 23:11...But he that is the greatest among you shall be a servant.
Hervy Harrison Hiner, Jr. MD was born December 29, 1954, to Hervy Harrison Hiner, Sr. and Annie Beatrice Jones Hiner. He was the oldest of four children born to that union. Siblings include Tony Caprice Hiner, Sr., Anthony Christopher Hiner, and Eva Annette Hiner Weatherly.
Dr. Hiner's legacy began with an education in the public school system in Pittsburg, Texas. With his parents being educators, he was greatly influenced and gained his love for helping others. He often accompanied his father on runs in the middle of the night when nearby families would bring their livestock and dogs that were sick or injured to their homes. He also often spent his early years on his parents’ farm caring for cattle and participating in livestock events. These experiences instilled a great love for animals within him, leading him to want to become a veterinarian. It wasn’t until a conversation with his aunt turned him toward medicine. Dr. Hiner attended his undergraduate college years at Stephen F. Austin State University and completed his studies in record time, which usually takes four years. He then went on to complete his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Dr. Hiner completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in Nephrology at Baylor College of Medicine. His appointments include Clinical Instructor of the Department of Medicine and Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Hiner wrote numerous publications on Renal Transplantations.
Dr. Hiner's career highlights include being the founder and CEO of his private practice at Southeast Texas Nephrology Associates, Port Arthur, for 35 years and the subsequent Beaumont office. He was also the director of the Community Dialysis Center of Beaumont and the Dialysis Department at St. Mary's Hospital, Port Arthur, Texas.
On the lighter side, he also enjoyed gardening and greatly loved growing roses. Amid the garden of roses was a statue of a ballerina, representing the love of his life, Rosalind. His passion for food led him to open Suga's Deep South Cuisine and Jazz Bar in downtown Beaumont, which remained open for sixteen years. He began his craze for collecting art and sculptures in 1990 and accumulated one of the country's largest collections of African Art. Dr. Hiner was a very sweet man with a "sweet tooth," which led him to experiment with and create many different flavors of ice cream. Sugas was initially designed to be an ice cream parlor but developed into a full-fledged restaurant. His deep love for food, art, music, and ice cream brought one of the world's finest dining experiences right here to Southeast Texas.
Survivors include the love of his life for 34 years, Rosalind Hall-Hiner of Beaumont, TX, son Harrison Phillip Hiner (Samantha Robles) of Austin, TX, daughter Dr. Nikki Savan Hiner of Sugar Land, TX, ex-wife and longtime friend, Deborah Ann Hiner of Pittsburg, TX, son Jordon Alexander Hiner of New York, NY.
