Hubert “Sonny” Winston McCray of Beaumont, Texas passed away July 22, 2019. Hubert was born on April 16, 1932 in Aruba, Netherlands West Indies to the late Johnnie Winston McCray and Bernice Nelson McCray.
Hubert graduated from Vidor High School and Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches working his way through college on a Track Scholarship. Hubert served active duty three years in the United Stated Army, 60th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion, Lakenheath, England and was Honorably Discharged August 1955. Hubert was employed as an accountant for Mobil Chemical Corporation and retired after 30 years of service.
After retirement from Mobil Chemical Corporation Hubert was a Beaumont Independent School District trustee for 18 years. He was employed at Hardin Jefferson School District as business manager for 4 years and owned an Independent Farmers Insurance Agency for 16 years.
Hubert was married to his loving wife, Dorothy, for 61 years. Hubert was a member of Ridgewood Church of Christ for 41 years and served as deacon, visiting-preacher, door-greeter and foyer attendant.
Hubert grew up in a log cabin built by his father from trees cut from the site of the house. He served the community as Little League Baseball coach and adult leader of Troop 65 Boy Scouts of America. Hubert’s hobbies were bowling, softball, handball, fishing and carpentry. He loved bargaining at flea-markets and spending time with family at the cabin on Village Creek.
Hubert was proceeded in death by his loved ones, Grandfather David M. Nelson, Grandmother Carrie Perkins Nelson, Grandfather James Arthur McCray and Grandmother Ella Mae Lowery McCray.
Hubert is survived by his wife Dorothy Todd McCray, his sons, Hubert Todd McCray, Michael Allen McCray, Nathan Andrew McCray, his daughter-in-law, Martha Cheek McCray, his sister Linda McCray Romero, nieces Karla Romero Crain Watson, Crystal Romero Mueller and his nephew Joey Winston Romero.
Celebration of Hubert’s life will take place at Meadow’s Church of Christ in Beaumont, Texas at 10:00 AM Friday, July 26, 2019 officiated by Minister Rick Walker. The family will begin to receive friends beginning at 9:00 AM Friday. Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday July 25, 2019 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home.
