Jean Cravey

Dortha, better known as “Jean,” was born on October 31, 1939, to John Wesley Smith & Lillie (Ard). She grew up and attended school in Fred, TX.

At just 18 years old, Jean met the love of her life, John L Cravey. By the end of that very first evening together, they were engaged to be married—a love story that became the foundation of a beautiful life. They were married on July 6, 1959, and made their home in Buna, Texas, where they raised their three daughters: Darlene, Janice, and Sheri. Together as a family they built their forever home with their own hands from the ground up, brick by brick. They shared 63 wonderful years of marriage, a legacy rooted in love, faith, hard work, and family.

Although she never held what she would call a "payroll" job, she devoted her life to caring for others while helping provide for her family in countless ways. She opened her home and worked as a childcare provider, she was a talented seamstress and was especially known throughout the community for her exceptional skill as a self-taught wedding cake designer. A true perfectionist, Jean poured her heart into every cake she created and every stitch she made.

Jean had a gift for making people feel loved. She was known for giving the warmest, most sincere hugs and for her gentle, kind spirit. But beneath that kindness was a feisty streak that appeared whenever the situation called for it. Family members loved hearing the story of the time she repeatedly asked a man at the lake to clean up after his dog. After her polite requests were ignored, Jean quietly picked up the mess herself, located his campsite, smeared it across the steps of his camper, and walked away unnoticed. It became one of the many stories that captured her quiet determination and unforgettable sense of justice.

Jean and John spent more than 40 years enjoying life at Marina Village, where countless weekends were filled with family, friends, and treasured memories by the lake. She loved dancing - especially at the community 4th of July dance at the lake, with her favorite song being Silver Wings that her and John would dance to every year. She also enjoyed listening to music, reminiscing and telling stories, crocheting, and bringing joy to others through her famous homemade chicken and dumplings. Nothing, however, brought her greater happiness than spending time with her family. They were the center of her world.

Born on October 31, Jean embraced her Halloween birthday with delight. Every year she dressed as a witch, much to the amusement of her family. Her grandchildren affectionately nicknamed her "Witchy Poo," while others often called her "Jeanie Weenie"—though she never cared much for either name. Those playful moments reflected the love of her family she treasured above all else.

She is survived by her daughters, Dortha Darlene Reed and husband Jeff of Orange, Texas; Janice Kathryn Pate and husband Orvis (“Buddy”) of Kirbyville, Texas; and Sheri Annette Westbrook and husband Terry of Bayou Vista, Texas. She is also survived by her brothers, William Herbert Smith (“Buddy”) and wife Melody of Merryville, Louisiana, and Raymond Lee Smith (“Bae Bae”) and wife Gaynell of Silsbee, Texas; nine grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.

Jean was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John L Cravey; her parents, John and Lillie Smith; her sister, Betty Lois Tiblier; her brother, John Wesley Smith ("Johnny"); her granddaughter, Holly Michelle Pate; and her grandson, Joshua Dale Pate.

Jean will be remembered for her unwavering love of family, her generous heart, her remarkable talent, her unforgettable hugs, and the countless happy memories she created for everyone who was fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched and in the family she loved so deeply. She will be dearly missed and forever remembered. However, it is the family's hope that you leave here today with only one image in mind and hopefully it brings you as much comfort as it has them.

When Jean started her journey up the stairs to heaven, she looked up and saw John smiling from ear to ear while saying come on Jean!

A Visitation will be held on Monday, July 27, 2026 at Adams E.E. Stringer Funeral Home in Buna, TX. from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

A Celebration of Jean’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 28, 2026 at Adams E.E. Stringer Funeral Home in Buna, with cemetery services to follow at Antioch Cemetery in Buna, TX.

Pallbearers: Cody Pate, Corbin Seals, Dakota Vice, Jacoby Cherry, Britt Seals, Brett Joiner, Michael Sonnier & Easton Miller.
