Gerald Allen Myers passed away with peace and grace early in the morning of Monday, January 24th in his home with family. He was born August 11th, 1940 in his family home in Beaumont, Texas. He graduated from French High School in 1958, and after time at Lamar University enlisted in the United States Navy where he studied electronics and communications. He was honorably discharged in 1963 upon completion of duty. He went on to work at Texas Instruments in Dallas, followed by Lockheed Martin, where he spent his time at Johnson Space Center working on equipment for NASA. He was involved in designing and transporting equipment that went on the first trip to the moon. During this time, he married his sweetheart Loretta Sue Sanders in 1961.
Their first son, Gerald Glen, was born in October of 1963. Followed by daughter Stella Sue in April of 1965 and son Mark Allen in January of 1969. In 1970 his father in law asked him to manage his business, Mobile Two Way Service in Beaumont, Texas. Jerry moved the family back home from Plano to Beaumont. He enjoyed golfing and one day while out golfing after being bitten by a mosquito he acquired a viral infection that landed him in the hospital for three weeks, the end result being a loss of sight. He continued to run Mobile Two Way even after losing his sight in June of 2001. He eventually sold the business after running it for 40 years.
Never before has such grace been witnessed as when he lost his sight. The man who took care of everyone now needed help. He immediately set about educating himself on how to cope and excel at this new lifestyle. He traveled to Biloxi, MI and made new dear friends and learned new life skills. In addition, he became involved with the Blinded Veterans Association, eventually helping start the Southeast Texas Chapter where he served as Vice President. He was truly amazing! He managed to keep learning as he had always done throughout his life. In 2019 he was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis.
The greatest joys of his life were his children and grandchildren. He was a giving and loving father and grandfather and would do anything for the ones he cherished. He will be incredibly missed by friends and family. His life is an example of grace.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta Sue Myers. He is survived by his children; Gerald Glen Myers (58), Stella Sue Myers (56), and Mark Allen Myers (52), and his grandchildren; Callie Glen Myers (30), Amanda Rae Maraist (29), and Connor Lee Myers (28).
Funeral arrangements will be held at 10am on Thursday, January 28th at Forest Lawn Memorial in Beaumont, Texas. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be sent to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation and the Southeast Texas Blinded Veterans Association.
A Gathering of Family and Friends for Jerry will be held Wednesday, January 26, 2022 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 4955 Pine Street, Beaumont, Texas 77703. A Celebration of Jerry's life will occur Thursday, January 27, 2022 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home.
