Dr. John Womble, age 62, passed away on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 in Houston, Texas. Services will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Dr. John Womble was born to John and Emily Womble on September 24, 1952 in a small town, well known for their cowboy boots, Nocona, Texas. His father and mother preceded him in death. John's father was a ballroom dancer and his mother was an elementary school English teacher.
John attended primary and High School in Nocona, Texas, where he graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1971. After High School he attended the University of Texas in Austin, Texas earning a degree in Bachelor of Science and Zoology with high honors in 1976. After college he attended Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas where he received a degree in Doctor of Medicine in 1981. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa- Alpha of Texas at the University of Texas, in the spring of 1976 (OBK Member). John did his internship from 1981-1982 at Scott and White Memorial Hospital and Scott, Sherman and Brindley Foundation Temple, TX - Obstetrics- Gynecology.
John was employed at League Medical Concepts at the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Beaumont, Texas in 2013 where he worked until 2015 as Medical Director of South Central Region. Before his employment at League Medical Concepts Dr. Womble worked at UTMB from 2005 until 2013 where he also served as Medical Director of South Central Region. Under Dr. Womble's leadership his medical staff was able to achieve the highest rating of 100 percent superior rate with JACHO Program Review. FCC Beaumont was and has been the only Federal Bureau of Prisons in history whose medical staff passed with 100 percent, awesome job Dr. Womble.
Dr. Womble was also the Medical Director of the TDCJ Montford Unit in Lubbock, TX, Emergency Doctor in the ER of Memorial Hermann in Ben Taub in Houston, TX, and he was employed at Rusk State Hospital in Rusk, TX.
Dr. Womble was involved in many Outreach Ministries in his community with his wife, which include; 2008-2013: Womble's Company Annual Easter Egg Extravaganza, 2009-Present: Back to School Supply for Local Communities, 2009: Christmas Bag Giveaway for Local Communities and Churches, 2011-2014: Breast Cancer Awareness Walk, 2014: Men's Health Awareness and 2005-2014: Prison Medicine. He was also a member of the Physicians of Texas and the NAACP.
Left behind to cherish his memory is his wife, The Queen of five glorious years, Joyce Womble of Beaumont, Texas. Two loving, caring, and compassionate sons, Travis (Destiny) of Houston, Texas and Austin (Lauren and granddaughter, Vivian) of Denver, Colorado. Two stepsons, Cedric and Eric Spikes of Orange, Texas. One brother, Don (Debra) of Justin, TX. One goddaughter, De'Quita Jenkins Beaumont, Texas. One godson, Zy'Ryn Beaty of Bon Wier, Texas. A host of nieces, nephews, sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, family, employees, and friends.
