Joe has always been one of the few men I have held in high esteem. He was always very encouraging to me and kept his word. I am now past my 76th birthday but still preaching.  Deanie and I recalled Joe stopping to check on us, especially when the twins were born. I especially remember Joe building the best bookcases I ever had in an office. I wish very much I had the same today in my office which is now in basement of our house. 

The Hanzel’s are always remembered when we talk about folks we have known through the years.  Joe is so special in our memories. Very few men are like him. 

I could write much more regarding your daddy. Rebecca, you can take great comfort knowing your daddy has always been a very special man. I have known Joe since January of 1979 (39 years) and he is one of the very best of men I have known in all my life. I appreciated him very much. I take comfort in knowing he is a Christian. We will all miss him but are confident of God’s promises. We will always have our memories which can never be taken from us.

I remember Joe, my neighbor, as a precious child. He was so much like his father - kind and sweet to all.  He was a faithful Christian, husband, father and grandfather.  He will be missed.

Joe was an extraordinary man. He was a Christian - not just in word / label, but in deed. He was a gentle, loving, humble. and kind spirit. Joe always put others first and if you were fortunate enough to cross his path, he had a way of making you feel appreciated, valued and special. He was not only my brother-in-law, he was like a brother to me. I will miss him a great deal. He has left a void here on earth. He will always hold a special place in my heart. Blessings to his family and prayers for them to rely on God and the wonderful memories they have with him to lift their spirits.

He was a Gentle Giant. Strong physically and emotionally - yet never imposing and always welcoming. Never shy about expressing his opinion, he was always sensitive towards others - making them feel special, no matter what or when. His bright eyes, big heart, & smile will be sorely missed.

What a kind, gentle, and genuinely sweet man!! He was a wonderful example of a Christian. I've known and loved the Hanzel family my whole life! My love and prayers go out y'all, Lynda, Rebecca, Malcolm, and your sweet families!! I love you all

Joe was such a wonderful person to be around. He always had a smile and something nice to say when we met, and he always came up with funny things to say. He loved life, he loved his family, and he loved his friends. And of course everyone loved his biscuits!

One could easily see that he put God first in his life. He was a sweet, dear friend, and we will miss him.

What an impact, Joe made on our lives as a family.  He was here in New York for only a year.  Yet, his influence  lasted a lifetime.  The memories of his legacy will be in our hearts forever.  He is a role model for all followers of Christ.  He and his family are in our prayers during this time.

Papa Joe brought laughter, love and support into my life at a young age (and particularly dark time).  His kindness changed the trajectory of my life which I will forever be grateful for.  It was a blessing to be a part of his life.  While he will be missed, they say your greatness is not what you have, it's what you give.  By Papa Joe's impact on my life (and all of those around him), he was a great man.  May he Rest In Peace.

Uncle Joe was and always will be a great example of a life that was filled with walking with the Lord all the days of his life. We will miss him dearly.
