Margaret Head passed away on June 1, 2013. She is preceded in death by her husband, Alton; her parents Samuel and Sadie Lewis-Haddad; her brothers Abe and Sam Lewis-Haddad; her sisters Nell Debes, Rose Peloyan, and Jay Miller.
She is survived by her son John Craig Head, his wife Tamara, and her beloved granddaughter, Lauren; her sisters Jane Carroll and Betty Hebert of Beaumont, Texas; and Joyce Rasmussen of Hartsdale, New York. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved greatly.
Margaret was born on May 22, 1920 to Samuel and Sadie Lewis-Haddad, who immigrated to the United States from Mount Lebanon. She was raised on the family rice farm in Fannett, Texas with her two brothers and six sisters.
Her mother was contacted by the Bible Students in 1917 and accepted an Arabic language Watchtower magazine subscription. In 1937, when John Adams, a pioneer, came by the farm and offered the family a home bible study, they readily accepted. Margaret and her mother, who were born on the same month and day, were also baptized together in August 1938 in Beaumont. The other children were soon baptized as well.
Around this same time, the family relocated to Beaumont so the children could benefit from additional educational opportunities. Margaret was a senior in high school. She excelled in academics and sports; she was a straight-A student and enjoyed baseball, volleyball, and was the captain of the girl’s basketball team at Beaumont High School.
Early on, Margaret was eager to share her deep faith with others. At 16 years old, she wrote a term paper titled, “Jehovah the True God.” She was not sure how it would be received, but just had to share convictions and newfound knowledge. As it turned out, she received an “A” on the paper and her teacher submitted it to the school library for current and future students and teachers to read.
After graduating from high school she began working as a magazine distribution estimator for the Edwards News Company. She held this job throughout the World War II and for some years afterwards. She was recognized as the best estimator for the company, statewide.
While Margaret did well secularly, it was not her passion. Her greatest joy and fulfillment came from participating in the preaching work, teaching Bible truths to all who wanted to learn. She was an avid Bible student, regularly digging into the deeper subjects and expanding her knowledge.
Margaret met her husband Alton Craig Head when he and his pioneer partner, John Carroll, needed assistance in documenting their preaching activities in East Texas. Margaret and her sister Jane typed Alton and John’s account and two romances were born, Margaret marrying Alton on July 24, 1948 and Jane marrying John at a later time.
Margaret and Alton were married 45 years before he passed away in 1988. Together they raised their son, John Craig Head, born in 1956. In 1990, she happily welcomed her only grandchild, Lauren and they were big buddies. At 67 years old, she could be found racing a grocery cart down an empty aisle, with Lauren in the front seat, squealing with delight.
Margaret was a very kind and gentle person who also had great strength. She loved her immediate and extended family deeply and we all look forward to the time when we will welcome her back in the coming resurrection on Jehovah’s paradise earth, ruled by his son, Christ Jesus.
John 5:28, 29
“Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life…”
