Matt was born November 20, 1958 in Beaumont, Texas, and was the first-born child of Linton S. Cowart, Jr., and Patricia Ann Dugas Cowart. He was an active and comical child, playing “soldiers” and inventing mischievous jokes with his sister. He lived his early and teen years in Rose City, Texas, where he was often found climbing trees with his sister and playing outside with the neighborhood kids.
He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed sailing, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, biking, camping, archery, four-wheeling, dirt bikes and gun-smithing. To state he liked a variety of activities is an understatement!
Matt was a true dog lover, especially golden retrievers. In fact, he spoiled his dogs. If he went out for a burger, he’d buy burgers for himself — and his dog!
He was a radical, throw-the-brick-at-the-TV Dallas Cowboy fan.
Matt worked loyally for Southwestern Bell, which later became AT&T. He enjoyed his job immensely and appreciated meeting people from all walks of life. The stories he would tell are hilarious!
Matt is survived by his loving mother, Patricia; sister Deborah Chavers and husband Seaborn, of Kentucky; uncle Leonard Cowart and wife Lynn; aunt Linda Ethridge and husband Mark; three nieces — Jade Chavers and Jessi Mills of Kentucky, Mikel Pak of Indiana. He had six cousins, three great nieces and two great nephews. He is also survived by Riley, his loving retriever and faithful friend.
Matt is fondly remembered for being the “cool” uncle, always showing up with the latest outdoor toys and happily playing with his young nieces outside, much to their enjoyment. He was a good, quiet and honest man who will not be forgotten.
