Vohn Myers, Jr. was born on March 19, 1939 in Beaumont, TX. Vohn attended French High School in Beaumont. He accepted a scholarship from McNeese State College in Lake Charles, Louisiana, where he was a leader on the golf team. He received a BS in Secondary Education/Mathematics. At McNeese he met his bride of 61 years, Freddie Greer Myers.
Vohn served as an educator and coach for over 30 years making an impact on students, athletes, and fellow educators. He retired from Barbers Hill ISD where he was instrumental in coaching the 1983 girls’ basketball state champions. Vohn coached state participating golf teams taking both girls and boys to compete at the highest levels. He was an inductee in 2025 to the Barbers Hill Sports Hall of Honor for his contributions.
His passion was always golf, as he started playing at nine years old. He got a job caddying at the Beaumont Country Club where he watched and learned. Vohn and the other caddies would be allowed to play the course on Mondays, and then they would cool off in the Neches River right down the road afterward. Vohn played golf at French High his junior and senior years. He was a member of the Beaumont Golf Association state junior tournament team. One of his favorite stories is how he got a phone call from the golf coach at McNeese who offered him a full ride scholarship to play golf without the coach ever seeing Vohn play. He was a golf champion from Beaumont, and made headlines in tournaments played in Texas and Louisiana.
After retiring in 1996, Vohn played even more golf and marshalled at Eagle Pointe Golf Course in Mont Belvieu, TX. He served as a Sunday School teacher, maintenance director, and usher at the First Methodist Church in Dayton. He was instrumental in organizing the Kids to Camp Golf Tournament via his church to raise money for children to be able to attend church camp and learn about Jesus. After moving to Lake Jackson to be near his daughter, he was a respected member of the Lighthouse Baptist Church. He enjoyed coaching his grandchildren in various sports. He loved his family with all his might, and was always proud to see his children and grandchildren excel.
