Mark graduated from South Park High School, Class of 1972 where he was a proud member of the South Park Greenie band. During high school, his band director, who was also a pilot, started an aviation class which gave Mark the opportunity to learn how to fly. He took off, flew, then landed the plane several times. This was an experience he fondly remembered throughout his life. He continued his education at Lamar, graduating with honors, and was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society.
Mark served his country as a veteran of the United States Air Force, where he also shared his musical talents as a member of the Air Force Band. Music remained a passion throughout his life.
In March of 1990, Mark married the love of his life, Cathy (Bedair) Barrett. They shared 29 devoted years of marriage until her passing in 2019. Their love was steadfast and enduring, and he carried her memory in his heart every day. Now, we take comfort in knowing he is reunited with his beautiful wife.
Above all, Mark was a man of deep and abiding faith. A devoted member of The Apostolic Church of Beaumont, he faithfully served the Lord with humility and joy. His relationship with God was the foundation of his life. He did not simply attend church, he lived his faith daily. Whether through prayer, service, encouragement, or quiet acts of kindness, Mark reflected Christ’s love to everyone he encountered. He was a true people person who never met a stranger and was always a blessing to others. His warm spirit, gentle heart, and unwavering testimony left a lasting impact on countless lives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Cathy (Bedair) Barrett.
Mark is survived by his son, Jonathan David Barrett; his siblings, Catherine “Cathy” Richmond and husband John of Lumberton, and Chris Barrett of Plano. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Though he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, we rejoice in the assurance of his faith. He is now resting at the feet of Jesus, whole and at peace, reunited with his beloved wife in eternal glory.
On behalf of Mark, the family would like to thank Dr. Maithel and the oncology team at Memorial Hermann who have given him wonderful care for the past 16 months. Also a special thanks to Pastor Jason Carr & special friends Randy Hughes and Brenda Honeycutt who visited him often and brought joy in this last days.
