Barbara Ann Braun
June 19, 1941 – July 26, 2019
Barbara Ann (Davies) Braun died on July 26, 2019 in Arizona due to complications from Post Polio Syndrome. She was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, was raised mostly in California, and has also lived in Missouri and Iowa.
Mom (aka, Barbara or Bobbie) was loving, affectionate, compassionate, creative, funny, gregarious and adventurous.
She had a beautiful voice and loved singing. She often told us about singing at the Hollywood Bowl when she was 18 years old. Over the years she was in many singing groups.
She told us she was raised by nuns. She lived at a boarding school on and off from second grade through junior year of high school, Villa Cabrini Academy in Burbank. She spent a great deal of time with the nuns who were very good to her.
During her time at the boarding school, at age 10, she contracted polio. After nine months in an iron lung, she then endured surgery on her spine, which left her in a body cast for a long time (I think it was months). Aftereffects of the illness came back as Post Polio Syndrome (PPS) as she aged. PPS caused her quite a bit of pain through the years.
The doctors told her she couldn’t have kids. She got married and had four children, 11 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Some of her favorite work outside of the home was as a substitute teacher, as a producer and occasional DJ at a local radio station, and teaching self-help classes at a community college. Over the years she enjoyed many creative projects including sewing, jewelry-making, painting and sculpting clay.
She loved visiting her family when she could. Her favorite memories are of visiting her kids and grandchildren. Also, visiting her sisters Pam and Sandy, and visiting her favorite aunt, Rhody, who was like a mother to her. She loved them all dearly.
She was a beautiful, loving, and kind mother to have growing up.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Michael Braun, her children Mike Braun, Ed Braun, Bill Braun and Marjie Knudsen, and her grandchildren, Christopher Braun, Allie Dusterhoff, Jenna Tabor, David Knudsen, Sannah Braun, Jake Knudsen, Joey Braun, Sophie Braun, Nico Braun, and Julia Braun, and her great-grandchildren, Mason Dusterhoff, and Jadyn Tabor.
