Bejeweled in bangle bracelets and gold charms, Anne loved sharing photos of her grandchildren with anyone who crossed her path. She looked forward to discussions with her book group, and the company of her P.E.O Sisters while making greeting cards. Talented jewelry maker, Anne also enjoyed beading and crafts or going out to a brew pub for a specialty salad and a gin and tonic. Watching “The Cubbies” play baseball was a much-anticipated event for Anne and her extended family. Frequently sharing phone calls reporting on stolen bases, upsets, and home runs. No matter what the occasion, Anne was adorned with jewelry, scarves, handbags, and all of life’s fun accessories.
Anne was born on November 16, 1959, into the hustle and bustle of two older brothers, William and Robert, and an older sister, Susan. Anne’s brother remembers running all the way home from school, “Without stopping!” on the day his new baby sister was released from the hospital in Sikeston, Missouri.
Iowans at heart, Anne’s mother and namesake Beverly Anne Anderson, was a homemaker, and her father Elwyn Shane Anderson was a CPA for Potlatch paper company. Being the youngest of four, Anne hit the ground running, forming memories of being part of a big family early on. Her brother, Bob recalls adventures of being “just old enough to look after his baby sister for a bit,” and teaching (the not quite school-age) Anne how to climb the rot iron fence onto the carport roof.
Anne’s childhood was a compilation of stories about siblings, road trips to visit grandparents, picnics at the beach, and time spent with her cousins. Anne and her siblings had a meaningful upbringing with Fifi the family poodle and other various cats, rabbits and turtles over the years. Beverly and Elwyn sure had their hands full!
Bill was the oldest of the pack, nearly ten years Anne’s senior. He walked her to school in kindergarten- this was one of Beverly’s favorite memories of her children- her oldest and youngest hand-in-hand, off to kindergarten! Anne referenced her close relationship with Bill in her childhood poetry and reflective essays.
Anne’s lifelong love for a good spy novel was quite possibly inspired by having an older brother who was an F.B.I. agent. Bill and Anne remained close until his passing in February 2021.
Anne moved from Missouri with her family to Lewiston, Idaho for her elementary years, and Santa Rosa, California for her secondary education. Her final move with her parents was to Cloquet, Minnesota in the mid-seventies. At this point she was the last child at home, and it was her father’s final career move before retirement.
During these years in Minnesota, Anne traveled with her parents and grandmother to places such as Hawaii and Japan. These experiences stuck with Anne until her final days. While having sushi and the notable Japanese beer for her 66th birthday, she happily exclaimed, “I have had a Sapporo in Sapporo!”
Education was a large part of Anne’s upbringing. Her parents always said, “Your education is something no one can take from you.” Anne, her mother Beverly, and her sister Sue were all members of the philanthropic organization, P.E.O. Members of P.E.O. work together in local chapters to fundraise and support college scholarships for women. Anne’s niece, Katy, continues the family P.E.O. tradition.
Frank and Anne met in 1979 at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. Initially they were friends and by college graduation in 1982, they were headed for marriage. Celebrated with friends and family, Beverly Anne Anderson (Anne) and George Francis Hammond (Frank) were married in Portland, Oregon in 1985.
Anne and Frank lived in Southeast Portland near Anne’s sister, Susan, where they played an active role in the lives of their nieces Elizabeth (1982) and Kaitlin (1986). They would often take their nieces on overnights and outings, testing the waters of what would soon become their own family adventure.
After three years of marriage, Anne and Frank welcomed their first son James, in July of 1988. In 1989, Frank’s job took their family to Anchorage, Alaska off-and-on until their daughter Charlotte was born in June of 1990. Jason was born in January of 1996, at this point the Hammond family resided in Southwest Portland where they remained for most of their child-raising years. Eventually, work took Anne, Frank, and Jason to Medford where Jason excelled in high school theatre, Anne was part of a P.E.O. chapter, and Frank practiced law.
Family needs brought Anne and Frank back to Vancouver, WA around 2013. Anne helped significantly with care for her father as he battled dementia and supported her nieces as her sister Sue, passed in 2018. At this point Anne remained close to her parents and was fundamental in helping with both of their care through their final years of life.
In 2020 Anne and Frank were blessed with their first grandchild, Alma, and had three more to follow in short order! Anne was able to spend time with all her grandchildren the past five years. Meeting her newest grandbaby Henry, for the first time, was one of the last Earthly joys of Anne’s life.
Anne and Frank cherished family vacations to Sunriver, Black Butte Resort, Yachats, Camp Sherman, and other Oregon destinations. They would often invite their nieces, nephews, and Anne’s parents on these expeditions which created many laughable memories. The rental in Black Butte where bath water poured through the kitchen ceiling light fixtures, or the little bit too rustic of a dwelling at Camp Sherman when the entire family, (grandparents and all) ended up sleeping in a van because of rodents in the cabin running across their feet while their sleeping bags.
Anne and Frank prioritized taking local trips and having shared experiences as a family. National Park tours and Eastern Oregon vacations, quick wit and a clever sense of humor, are unifying traits and experiences the Hammond’s crafted over the past thirty-seven years of being a family.
Anne is survived by her children who all hold college degrees and delight in learning about the world. James is an aerospace engineer who resides with his partner Caroline and their children, Alma (2020) and Anton (2024) in Berlin, Germany. Charlotte is a licensed CPA who resides with her husband Michael and their two children, Theodore (2022) and Henry (2025) in Towson, Maryland. Jason is a paralegal who enjoys baking, knitting, and writing. He currently resides in Vancouver, WA. Anne’s husband of forty years, Frank, is still practicing law and enjoying his two Golden Retrievers, Winston and Max.
Anne is also survived by her brother Robert Anderson, her brother-in-law Burton Reif, her sister-in-law, Pauline Anderson, her Tempelton and Anderson cousins, All her nieces and nephews in the Pacific Northwest, and her P.E.O sisters across Oregon and Washington.
A memorial service will be held at Pegg Paxson & Springer Funeral Chapel, located at 4675 SW Watson Avenue, Beaverton, OR, 97005, United States. The service is scheduled for December 11, 2025, at 2:00 pm.
