Carol Hilborn Birdges quietly passed away at St. Vincent's Hospital with her husband and several close friends nearby. Carol had an 8 year courageous battle with Ovarian Cancer and was aided in this struggle with a wonderful and caring staff at Northwest Cancer Specialists. Her care was skillfully managed by Dr. Lisa McCluskey. Carol was born in the San Francisco Bay area. Her birth mother (Rusty) was a young unmarried stewardess for American Airlines. Carol was quickly adopted by Dr. Ed and Geneva Hilborn and she was raised in Menlo Park, Ca.
Carol attended Occidental College and later attended and graduated from the University of Oregon. While attending the U of O she met Wayne Bridges, whom she married after they reconnected years later. Their 22 year marriage was a blessing for both.
Carol had a long career including working for EDS and Standard Insurance where she eventually became the Manager of the Long Term Disability Benefits Group. In 1990, Carol was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and spent several years recovering while still working. In 1992, Carol and her husband decided to take a different path in life and retired early. Several long trips ensued including several months of traveling the back roads of the U.S. She loved the people contact in little known places.
Carol eventually found herself volunteering at a small rustic school on Farmington Rd. called Hazeldale Elementary. For the next 16 years was her labor of love. She volunteered for 10 years in helping children with reading problems. Eventually she was employed by the Beaverton School District for 6 years as a reading specialist for children severe delayed reading skills at Hazeldale. During this time (2003) she was deagnosed with Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer and a new challenge ensued for the next 8 years. The school district and the school staff at Hazeldale where so helpful and supportive.
Carol wanted so much to leave this world a better place and with her love, caring and generosity she succeeded in many ways. Carol touched a lot of hearts with her love of children, animals (especially cats) and her consideration of others needs. Carol was her large family's "go to" person who could always be counted to go take care of the elder members around the country.
Carol is survived by her husband, Wayne; Miller Logan of Florida (he later married Rusty, Carol's birth mother) and many family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Geneva and her birth mother, Rusty.
