born September 24, 1932, the youngest son of William and Mary Gabel. Clarke lived his entire life in the
Portland area, graduating from Sherwood High School. Upon high school graduation he enlisted into the
Navy at the start of the Korean War. His military duty was in Hawaii where he was detached to Hickham
Air Force Base working as a metal smith on airplanes. After the service he attended Portland State
College majoring in elementary education. He married Carol Baker; they divorced. They had two
daughters, Marcie and Julie. Clarke taught 30 years for Portland Public Schools, teaching every subject
but Home Ec. His primary subjects were social studies and language arts. In 1977, he met and married
Judy Pedersen. Together they traveled the world, visiting and appreciating different cultures. Highlights
included Israel, China, and South Africa. He was active in church and was leader of a Bible study in their
home for 20 years. He is survived by his wife, Judy; daughter Marcie Nations; daughter Julie Meisner
(Ed); and 6 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Private interment was at Willamette National
Cemetery. A memorial service will be held March 17, 2018 at Westside: A Jesus Church, at 2 p.m. In lieu
