It is with great sadness and heavy hearts we announce the passing of Darlena W. Fong of Beaverton, Oregon (and former longtime resident of Astoria, Oregon). Darlena passed peacefully on Thursday, August 7, 2025 in the presence of loved ones. Darlena is survived by daughters Minerva Maeda (Dean) and Theresa Graf (Eric), granddaughters Stephanie Maeda, Jessica Maeda, Tori San Juan (Justin) and Alexis Graf. She is preceded in death by husband Bing G. Fong.
Our beloved mom was born in Canton, China on July 29, 1934 and immigrated to the United States via Hong Kong in her twenties. Seeking employment opportunities, Mom moved to San Francisco and ended up meeting an old friend from Hong Kong. Mom and Dad married in San Francisco where both Minerva and Theresa were born. Eventually, Mom and Dad made their way back to Astoria where they both worked in the seafood canneries. Mom and Dad enjoyed their time visiting friends and family throughout the northwest and frequently took day trips to Portland just to have lunch. After Dad’s passing, Mom could be seen taking her daily walks throughout Astoria and volunteering at the Astoria Loaves and Fishes where she made many wonderful friends. Eight years ago, Mom moved out to Beaverton to be closer to family, however, she would frequently take trips to Astoria which remained home in her heart.
Mom’s wishes were to not “inconvenience” friends and family with funeral services, but to remember her during your next yummy meal. Please remember those happy memories with Mom and always keep her in your hearts.
We love you and will miss you Mom.
