Donald Hugh Meikle
August 4, 1959 – October 27, 2018
Donald Hugh Meikle died in his sleep of a heart attack on October 27, 2018. He was born on August 4, 1959 in Ionia, Michigan to parents Donald and Jean Meikle. He joined four older sisters. He was a kind and imaginative child who demonstrated an early talent for music and good humor. He graduated from Rex Putnam High School and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education at Western Oregon University. He earned a Master’s degree in Educational Administration at Portland State University. Don taught elementary school and served as a reading specialist in several different school districts. During his teaching career, he also taught chess to young students. After retiring, he worked in Guest Services for the Rose Garden and enjoyed observing many different concerts, events and sports and the people watching them.
Don was a gifted teacher and a talented musician. He played saxophone with the One More Time Around Marching Band, as well as singing or playing the guitar for various church choirs. He enjoyed watching women’s basketball and Oregon football. As his mother aged, he was her support and primary care-giver. Don was a good brother and gave his family many moments of laughter and love. He will always be in our hearts.
Don is survived by his sisters, Susan, Maggie, Martha (Ken), Donna (Jerry) and step-sister Carla. He is also survived by nieces and nephew Amy (Jed), Andrew (Lisa), Katie, Sarah and Janelle. The family will hold a memorial service at 1 p.m. on November 18, 2018 at Westside United Methodist Church in Beaverton.
