Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Don was the second of six children of the late Dr. Ralph Westfall and Marjorie L. (Goode) Westfall. During his childhood Don, with his older brother and parents, lived in several places including in 1946, during Dad's active-duty service, when they relocated to the Panama Canal Zone. An interesting result of this was when they returned to the Midwest, the two little boys did not remember having seen snow! It was even written up in the local newspaper.
As the family grew during the baby boom, more moves to larger homes followed, eventually settling in the S.W. Portland / Beaverton area. After graduating from Beaverton High School in 1961 Don began college in Vancouver, then in Missouri and finally at PSU. In the mid-to-late '60's however, Don served in the U.S. Army, luckily in Germany rather than Vietnam. After discharge he finished his B.S. degree at PSU and in 1971 began work at St. Vincent Hospital. During his 35 years at St. Vincent Don met and later married Susan, who also worked in the emergency room. They were married for 33 years. Before his illness, Don and Sue enjoyed traveling in their RV camper as well as gardening and any number of projects including planting and tending two wonderful plots of roses.
Don was a true DIY guy; it always seemed that he could do or fix anything he put his hand to. He would tackle any repair or upkeep job, and always maintained his vehicles. Decades after he bought his brand-new 1969 VW Bug, it still smelled like a new car.
Don was preceded in death by brothers Ralph, Gary and Gail; he is survived by his wife, Susan, sister Beverly Betzer and brother Bruce. Interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery.
A Committal Service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 SE Mt Scott Blvd, Portland, OR 97086, on July 6, 2026, from 10:00 am to 10:30 am.
