August 5, 1938 – January 7, 2017
Sister Janice (Janice Mary Boogaard) was born August 5, 1938 in Perham, Minnesota, to Cornelius and Alfreda Boogaard. Sister’s elementary and secondary education took place in several locations: Otter Tail County, MN; New York Mills, MN; Verboort, OR; Rochester, NY; and St. Mary of the Valley, /Beaverton, OR. Higher education was gained at Portland Community College (Food Service Certificate); University of Portland (Certificate in Religious Education); and Marylhurst (BA in Pastoral Ministry). Sr. Janice was an avid learner and attended a variety of workshops and seminars.
Sister Janice was received as a novice by the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon on August 15, 1956, and became known as Sr. Mary Mark; in 1961 Sister made her final profession. She served in various positions in the Community throughout her sixty years of Religious life: as housekeeper, cook, laundress and baker until 1981 when she began serving as Religious Education Coordinator at St. Boniface in Sublimity; Master Catechist at St. Thomas, Camas, WA; Director of Religious Education at St. Paul Parish in Silverton; and Pastoral Associate at St. Francis in Sherwood. She retired from full-time ministry in 2002 but continued to serve others in various ways.
For many years Sr. Janice was the coordinator of the “7th Graders Program” at the Motherhouse and found great joy in supporting the students at their performances and presentations. Always interested in what was happening in the Community, her ready smile was trumped only by the sparkle in her eye. Changing schools as often as she did as a child did not dampen her spirit of meeting and visiting with old friends and new acquaintances!
Sister is survived by her Sisters in Community, her brother, Jerry (Lois), her brother Ron (Marilyn), her sisters Bev (Joe) Evers, Margie (Walt) Vandehey, Darlene (Chuck) Moore, and Joyce (Jerome) Hunter, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Virginia, and her brother Jim.
