
Lester Sked Savage was born June 12, 1934, and left this world on June 12, 2025. Lester was born in Wyoming and raised with his younger brother and two younger sisters in Ohio. After High School, Lester joined the Navy and moved to Connecticut, where he had five children; Vicki Biladeau, Steven Savage, James Savage, Laurie Brinkerhoff and Catherine McCloud.
Lester served our Country for 30 years in the Navy from 1952 to 1983. He initially served on nuclear submarines and later as a recruiter. In 1970, Lester was stationed in the Philippines, then sent to Vietnam in 1971 where he served 1 year. In 1972 he attended Recruiting School in San Francisco.
Recruiting duty took Lester up and down the west coast, eventually settling in Portland, Oregon where he retired in 1983. Lester was very active in the Blue Back Base Submarine Veterans. Many years he helped bring Navy ships to the Portland Rose Festival and participated in getting the Blue Back Submarine, the U.S. Navy’s last active-duty diesel-electric submarine to display at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, where it is available for tours today.
In retirement, Lester enjoyed volunteering to help people in need of yard work and/or cutting wood. He loved to fish, boat, crab travel and hunt in Montana with his boys.
Lester is survived by his wife of 35 years Sandra Savage of Beaverton, Oregon; his 5 children; 4 stepchildren and many grand and great grandchildren.
