Louise E. Schneider of Portland, Oregon passed away Tuesday, November 27, 2018, at the age of 98.

Louise was born in Yakima, Washington on St. Patrick’s Day, 1920. She attended high school at St. Joseph Academy for three years and graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Wallace, Idaho in 1938. She attended the University of Washington for two years.

At the age of 23, in the middle of the Second World War, Louise entered the Women’s Army Corp. She was stationed in the U.S., Paris, France and Frankfurt, Germany where she primarily did clerical work and accounting for the Army Exchange Service until being honorably discharged in 1946. She then returned to Yakima and Toppenish, Washington to work for Pacific Power & Light where she met her future husband, Joseph A. Schneider, who had also served in World War II. Louise and Joseph were married in Yakima, Washington on September 11, 1948.

Following their marriage, Louise worked for various businesses in the Wapato, Washington area where she and Joseph lived and raised their family. Once in the Portland area, Louise worked as a bookkeeper for the Robison Jewish Home and Valley Community Presbyterian Church. Louise was a person of great energy with a “large and in charge” personality. She loved her family and friends and supported the underdog in any fight. She loved animals and gave particular care and affection to those who were sick or injured. She loved her Catholic faith and her country. She was a wonderful cook and homemaker. She watched over her children like a mother grizzly.

Louise was preceded in death by her parents, George and Aurora Vann, her husband, Joseph, and her siblings Marco “Cork,” Harry, Jo Ross, Helen Hugger, and son-in-law Steve McDonald.

She is survived by her children Michael Schneider and Gary Schneider of Anchorage, Alaska, Cynthia McDonald (Steve) of Beaverton, Oregon, and Paul Schneider (Greg Murphy) of Brewer, Maine.
