Lynn is survived and missed by his wife, Kathy (née Kathy Clarke), of 58 years; and his daughters, Theresa Tenney (Mike), Elizabeth Meeks (Tim), and Amy Clancy (Jim). He will be forever cherished and remembered by his eight grandchildren, Laika (Parker), Tabitha, Piper, Emily, Amanda, Charlie, Molly, and Jack.
Lynn was born on April 3, 1934, in Anacortes, Washington, to parents Ronald “Mutt” and Ethelwyn “Teddy” Schwartz. The family moved to Wrangell, Alaska, when he was seven years old. His childhood in Alaska provided material for endless harrowing and hilarious stories, including fishing, hunting, and his time with the Sea Scouts. Each account involved some form of survival, and all brought rounds of laughter. Lynn was one of the seven graduates of the Wrangell High School Class of 1953, where he played on the state championship basketball team. (The one and only state championship for the High School.)
After high school, Lynn attended Gonzaga University for one year. He was then drafted into the U.S. Army, serving in Alaska. Following his military service, he returned to school to finish his education at Seattle University, earning degrees in Theology and Mathematics. During his time at Seattle U, he felt a call to join the Jesuits, and spent five years in the seminary at Mount St. Michaels. Though he ultimately chose a different path, his deep faith remained a guiding force in all he did.
Lynn was introduced to Kathy by his future mother-in-law, and they married in 1967. Together they created a family founded in love and faith. He took great joy in teaching his daughters how to use tools and in building everything Kathy needed for her classroom and their home and garden. Lynn had a comprehensive workshop and could fix, design, and create practically anything. In retirement, Lynn and Kathy traveled the world, exploring together, cruising the seas, and visiting family.
Lynn was known for his kindness, generosity, humor, and big bear hugs. He adored his grandchildren, shared his wisdom and experience, and told mind-blowing stories. He made sure he had an answer for every question, even if it was a tall tale.
Lynn’s sharp mind and attention to detail earned much respect in his professional life as a cost engineer. He approached all projects and relationships with patience and precision. Lynn turned hardship into prayer with the simple and repeated phrase “offer it up.” We can honor his life through meaningful acts of love and service, like Christ modeled for us. His legacy carries on in his family and those touched by his generous and loving spirit.
A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 17, 2025, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Beaverton, OR, immediately followed by a reception in the parish hall.
