Marilyn was born July 3, 1937, the oldest of Richard and Dorothy Fay's nine children. She grew up in a busy, bustling house on 43rd Avenue in Portland. She attended St. Ignatius School, St. Mary's Academy, and the University of Portland where she met Jim Howe. The two were married Feb. 6, 1960 and began an adventure that would last 55 years.
Jim's broadcasting career took them to Billings, Mont., Pendleton, and then back to Portland where they settled in Beaverton and raised five daughters. If Raleigh Hills Elementary, Whitford Middle School, Beaverton High School, or St. Cecilia's Catholic Church had anything going on between the late 1960's and the early 1980's, Jim and Marilyn were probably there. Marilyn spent most of her time making sure her family of seven was running smoothly - going to school, going to church, having fun vacations at the beach and Detroit Lake - but she also found time to volunteer as a 4H Leader teaching sewing, and as a CCD teacher at St. Cecilia's. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, baking and gathering with family and friends.
She went to work as a bookkeeper when the college tuitions started rolling in. When Jim retired in 1999, so did Marilyn. They loved spending time at their cabin in the Santiam Canyon. When Jim passed away in 2015, Marilyn stayed in the Beaverton house for six years before moving to The Springs in Sherwood, Ore. She continued to enjoy visiting with friends and family - and recently gathered for a nice lunch with a group of friends she has known since grade school.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; and is survived by her children, Cathy Martin (Mark), Patty Carrasco (Tim), Caroline Howe, Susie Trahan (Sandy), and Sharon Krauel; her siblings, Dick Fay (Alice), Dennis Fay (Marilyn), Peggy Roeter, Elizabeth Armstrong (Jerry), Delores Sitko(Don); her grandchildren, Chelsea Serrano (Hector), Lacey Khor (Jay), Bob Krauel (Anna), Asher Krauel, Zach Trahan (Coral), Kate Zutaut (Mike); and seven great-grandchildren.
