Michael was born on May 21, 1963, in Burns, Oregon, to Cecil David Davies and Gertrude “Trudy” Elizabeth Phelps. The family moved to Vancouver, Washington, when Mike was a baby and later relocated to Klamath Falls, where he graduated high school (at Mazama High), in 1981. Mike ran track in high school and worked in customer service. In college, Mike worked full-time, until graduating in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Systems Engineering Technology from OIT (Oregon Institute of Technology).
The following year, Mike began his career at OmniTek, a small computer store in Portland. It was two short years later that Mike married the love of his life, Dianne, at Agnes Flanagan Chapel on the Lewis and Clark Campus (where Dianne had previously earned a degree in music), on June 30th, 1990.
Mike’s career path led him to employment at Computer Age before the Lord miraculously opened the door to his dream job at Fred Meyer. Mike worked in the corporate Fred Meyer office on Powell Blvd, in Portland for twenty-eight years, and then he worked from home the final five years until his formal retirement, in April 2025. During those last five years he worked remotely with a team in Cincinnati, Ohio that was updating Kroger’s network. His career at Fred Meyer / Kroger lasted thirty-three years.
Mike purposely designed his work to require minimum travel so he could focus on his first priority- his family. He was present at everything his sons, Kaleb and Joshua, did and participated in any helpful way he could. He coached various soccer and baseball teams during their elementary years, and when the boys joined marching band in high school, Mike was one of the faithful parents that packed and drove the Ryder truck with all the equipment to their competitions. Mike weekly mentored Joshua’s Robotics team and chaperoned their National competition.
Not only was Mike a doting father, he was also a supportive husband. He loved listening to Dianne practice piano and compose at home. When on a conference call and colleagues asked where that music was coming from, he proudly announced that it was his wife. He attended music conferences with her and traveled with her to presentation, adjudication, and performance gigs.
A variety of hobbies fueled Mike’s free time. He had a passion for classic cars and he loved to BBQ and smoke meat. He enjoyed woodworking projects, including building a fort tower in the backyard with a zip line, constructing bunk beds for his boys, and building their desks and shelves. Up until the day he died, Mike loved being active. Over his life, he enjoyed snow and water skiing, biking, hiking, paddle boarding, and target shooting at the range. It didn’t matter whether on the water or at the mountain, both could be considered his happy places.
Mike was a “Steady Eddy,” as he called himself. He was consistent, supportive, and ever encouraging. He was the backbone to many organizations and dependable to many people. He was strong and compassionate, and was always doing things for others.
Mike was loved very much and will be greatly missed.
Mike is survived by his wife, Dianne Davies; sons, Kaleb and Joshua; brother, David Davies; sister, Debbie Petrie; a niece, a nephew, and two great nephews. Mike is preceded in death by his father, Cecil Davies; mother, Trudy Davies; and stepmother, Dorothy Davies.
In lieu of flowers, charitable donations can be made in Mike’s honor to the American Heart Association.
