Patti spent the majority of her youth growing up in San Diego, California, where her father was stationed with the US Navy. Her life was forever changed on December 7, 1941. At the age of three years, her dad, a naval officer, left home to report for duty in WWII. He finally returned home about 1945 after the war was over. Those were difficult years for so many families, but Patti always spoke fondly of their community of neighbors in San Diego and her grandmother, Nora Kyne Archer who came for extended visits during the war years.
She attended high school in in San Diego, graduating from Grossmont High School in 1956, and then attended San Diego State College. On a fateful day in 1957, she met the love of her life, William Dennis Carroll at a Newman Club dance. She enjoyed telling the story of how she went home and said, “I’ve met the man I am going to marry.” Patti and Dennis were married February 1, 1958. They had four children in the following years: Patrick Dennis, Caroline Marie, John Scott and Sara Lisa.
After her marriage, Patti took great pride in her home and family. She always had a project she was working on. Many of those quilts, afghans and needlework projects can still be found in the homes of her children today. Her career as an escrow officer began in 1977 and lasted until retirement in 1993, when she and Dennis moved to Portland, Oregon.
Together, Patti and Dennis enjoyed many years of travel and made trips to Ireland, Italy, Florida, the Carolinas, Virginia, Washington DC and more. She especially enjoyed American history and based several trips around her interest in history and crafts.
Patti enjoyed many hobbies during her life including quilting, needlework and cooking. She was active in the RCIA program, was a lector and helped to publish a cookbook at St. Kieran Parish in El Cajon, California, their parish home for nearly twenty years. She will always be remembered for her award-winning applique quilting, and incredible family celebrations at the holidays.
Patti was preceded in death by her father, mother and brother Harry Jackson “Jack” Macdonald, and is survived by her four children Patrick Carroll (Sarah Kayson), Caroline Fogarty (Bill), John Carroll and Sara Carroll, five grandchildren, Crystal Marie Garcia, John-Patrick Fogarty, Nora Fogarty (Seth Jones), Clare Fogarty, Grace Marie Carroll, and one great-grandchild, Madison Rose Garcia.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 25 at 10 a.m. at Saint Pius X Catholic Church, in Portland, Oregon
