Robert John Doyle
Born on July 29, 1931, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to John J. and Mary Catherine Sullivan Doyle, Bob was a loving big brother to three sisters: “the twins” Eileen & Kathleen, and the funny one, Carol. The family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, and Bob grew up in Mount Lookout, where he first met his future wife, Mary Elizabeth Heitker, as teens. He recalled her as a vision in white angora. She thought he was a nice red-headed boy. They became a good, loving team.
Family was his touchstone. During their 61-year marriage, Bob and Mary took their seven children—Ellen, Marie, Paul, Pat, Barb, Tom and Moira—on many adventures, from mountain climbing to white water rafting; Ramona Falls to Wye campground; sailing to spelunking; Ohio to Michigan to Oregon; the kingdom of Florin to Middle Earth. And friends and family from far and wide were always welcome at the big, round family dining table.
Bob earned his B.S. and M.B.A. degrees from Xavier University. He proudly served in the U.S. Army as a master paratrooper with the 101st and 11th Airborne divisions, was a field artillery battery commander, and retired as a captain and Special Forces Green Beret.
He loved singing, shamrock green, reading and writing, travel, jokes, Mount Hood, a good conversation, whiskey in the jar, pinochle, and above all, his family.
We remember him with love as a man of learning and laughter, a generous mentor, who was disciplined, strong, open-minded and open-hearted, charitable and devoted. He believed in the power of love, the strength of community, and the enduring truth that we are here for one another.
Bob died October 5, 2026 in Beaverton, Oregon at the age of 95. He is survived by his children, sister Carol, and beloved grandchildren Andrew, Brendon, Maureen, Kramer, Maggie, Daniel, Gabriel, Ian, Finn, and great-grandchildren Norah, Odette and Leo.
His funeral mass will be celebrated by dear family friend, Father Jim Galluzzo, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Beaverton, Oregon on November 13, 2026, at 10am with a reception to follow. Interment with military honors will be at Willamette National Cemetery.
