Saul was born and raised in Portland, the only child of Miriam and David Zaik. He attended Irvington grade school and Benson Polytechnic High school. In 1946, after serving in the Navy, he enrolled at the University of Oregon where he earned a degree in Architecture and was on the Ski Team. After graduating in 1952 he returned to Portland where he met his future wife, Frances (Chris) Lowry. They married in 1955 and had two children.
Always a curious and active child Saul loved the outdoors which drew him to becoming an eagle scout, sea scout and summer counselor at Camp Meriwether as well as a lifetime of sailing, hiking and backpacking. But skiing was his passion, which he learned at 14 and enjoyed well into his 80's.
Beyond family and skiing his other passion was practicing Architecture, from which he never retired. He was a gifted contributor to N.W. contemporary design for which he received numerous awards. He was recognized early in his career by induction into the college of fellows of the National AIA. While best known for his residential work, both large and small, he also did a wide range of commercial and public projects. Saul appreciated fine craftsmanship and good functional design. His understanding and use of native N.W. materials was a special gift. Never an egotist he would be the first to applaud the good work of others. His architecture was timeless, engaging and always fit harmoniously into it's environment.
Optimistic and always cheery he cherished and appreciated his lifelong friends and those he met along the way. He was grateful for their friendships.
Saul lived a long, joyous and happy life in the place he loved dearly….OREGON.
He is survived by his wife, Chris; daughter, Tracy Zaik (Bruce Hodgkins); son, Peter Zaik; and granddaughters, Haley and Isabelle Zaik-Hodgkins.
