5, 2024 from heart failure.
The son of Angela Jones and Jerome Alderman, Shawn was born in Yakima, Washington, and raised in
Beaverton, Oregon, the oldest of two children.
A graduate of Beaverton High School and Lewis & Clark College where he played both basketball and
baseball, Shawn met his future wife and partner of 30 years Tori Lynn Roche while at Lewis & Clark. He
began his teaching and coaching career at Central Catholic High School in Portland. After CCHS, Shawn
taught and coached at Tigard High School, where he would establish himself as one of the most
accomplished high school basketball coaches in Oregon and along the way he became a fixture in the
Tigard community as well. Revered in coaching for his tactical prowess, relentless competitive spirit, and
considerable motivational abilities, Shawn made a huge impact on others through the discipline, care,
generosity, and love he poured into his students, players, and teams over the course of his nearly three
decades at THS. More than the many championships and awards won, Shawn treasured the relationships
and friendships he built in teaching and coaching.
Family was always the most important thing to Shawn. While he cast a big shadow in the coaching
profession, he was a gentle giant when you got to know him. Shawn loved spending time with his family,
particularly his daughters and his dogs. He also enjoyed golfing with buddies; watching, dissecting, and
debating all things sports (especially the Cubs, Ducks, Zags, and Broncos); studying culinary shows and
then cooking or barbecuing meals; and going on fun-filled excursions with Tori and their friends. He cared
deeply about the people in his life, and he had a knack for making them feel special by checking in with
them one way or another regularly. Without a doubt, Shawn saw his two daughters, Taylor and Avery, as
his greatest achievements. His girls were his pride and joy. Shawn loved them more than anything in the
world. He never missed an event in which his girls were participating, whether it was soccer, basketball or
even marathon, day-long track meets. If Taylor and/or Avery were involved, Dad was there.
Shawn is survived by Tori Alderman; his two daughters, Taylor Alderman and Avery Alderman; his mother
and stepfather, Angie & Greg Gill (Ontario, OR); his father and stepmother, Jerry Alderman and Lisa
Olson (Anchorage, AK); his sister and brother-in-law, Amy & Dave Madej and their two children, Emolyn
and Camden (Hawthorn Woods, IL); his mother-in-law, Lynn Molter (Wilsonville, OR); his brother-in-law
and sister-in-law Chris & Kristin Roche and their son, Jack (Wilsonville, OR); and many more family
members special to him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Tigard High School for a
scholarship that will be created in Shawn’s name or to Every Body Athletics, a nonprofit organization
about which the Alderman family is passionate.
Noche Bella, dear Shawn.
