Avon Charles Foster, Jr. (Bud) died peacefully on April 1, 2022 in the company of his wife and children. Bud was born on November 20, 1938 in Indianapolis to Avon Charles and Viola (Enders) Foster. He was the youngest of three children and he and his older sisters Carolyn and Elaine spent their childhood on Indy’s southside in their home on East Iowa Street.
Bud was a 1957 graduate of Manual High School, and after a brief career working at a downtown bank, he enlisted in the Air Force, where he was stationed in Goose Bay Labrador, Canada and at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida.
Bud married Yolanda Parker on January 6, 1962 while home on leave. Bud and Yolanda met in their early teens in their confirmation class at St. john’s United Church of Christ. They moved to Florida where Bud completed his military service and, ultimately, his degree in industrial engineering from Florida State University.
In 1968 the couple returned home to Indiana to raise their children, Bonnie and Paul. Bud worked for Chrysler Corporation and Ball Corporation among other places, retiring from Amcast Automotive in Fremont, Indiana in 2001. Work was a means to an end for Bud, though, and he most enjoyed his leisure time, playing golf, softball, wallyball and especially boating, waterskiing and fishing. Bud and Yolanda made great friends and had many good times spending winters in Davenport, Florida after Bud’s retirement.
Bud loved his family. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Yolanda (Parker) Foster, who was his heroic, exclusive caregiver until the last 6 weeks of his life. Also surviving is his sister Carolyn Nevil, his daughter Bonnie Foster (David), son Paul Foster (Tammy), grandchildren Andrew Foster, Molly Foster, and Allison Foster, and many nieces and nephews that will miss him greatly. The recent loss of his sister, Elaine Pierce and brother-in-law Dwight Pierce was acutely felt by the entire family.
A celebration of Bud’s life will be on Wednesday, April 6 at 11:00 am at Geist Christian Church Mud Creek Campus, 8550 Mud Creek Rd., Indianapolis, with a gathering for all immediately following the service. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the charity of your choice.
