Betty C. McLeish

Betty, a life-long resident of Indianapolis, was born on April 12, 1924. She was the fifth of five children born to Joseph and Louisa Polking Leppert. She graduated from St. John’s Academy class of ‘42. During the war, Betty worked at the Trailways Bus Company. Betty was the Indianapolis CYO Ping-Pong champion, and played ping-pong and danced at the USO during the war. After the war, she worked at the Fountain Square Bank and later at the P.R. Mallory Company on East Washington Street.

Betty married the love of her life Joseph M. McLeish on October 6, 1951. They celebrated over 61 years together before Joe passed away on January 10, 2013.

Betty was very accomplished on the keyboards and played the organ at Masses, weddings and funerals from 1942 until 1992. For Betty, it was a calling, and on some weekends she played multiple Masses when the other organists could not be there. After raising three children, Betty returned to the workforce at Hamilton, Harris & Co.

She was a volunteer for many years at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove.

She was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church 2008-2012, Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church from 1960-2008, St. Patrick Catholic Church from 1939-1960, St. Catherine Catholic Church from 1934-1939, and St. Patrick Catholic Church from 1924-1934.

Betty is survived by her three children Claudia Majors, Michael (Karen) McLeish, and Rosemarie (Doug) Miller, seven grandchildren Mark Majors Jr., Michael (Brynne) McLeish Jr., Jennifer (Richard) Dalton, Christine (Daniel) Hord, Stephanie (Matthew) James, Kenneth Miller, and Allen (Jennifer) Miller, and by seven great-grandchildren. Betty was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings Francis “Pug” (Cecilia) Leppert, Thelma Leppert, who died in infancy, Alberta "Honey" (Bill) Lossin, Carroll “Doc” (Maribel) Leppert.

Viewing will be Monday 9AM-11AM at St. Monica Catholic Church, 6131 N. Michigan Rd, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11AM with internment following at St. Joseph Cemetery next to her beloved husband.
