71, of Beech Grove, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on June 10th, 2019. He is preceded by his loving wife Carolyn. James "Jim" was born on 8/19/47 to Dorothy "Dottie" Oliver and the late Robert A. Black. Jim attended Holy Name Catholic School and was a 1965 graduate of Southport High School. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend.

As a young man Jim volunteered for the Beech Grove Police Department as a reserve police officer. He went on to become a Master electrician and proud member of the IBEW 481 for 49 years. In 1986 he joined Long Electric as Service Manager and was promoted to Vice President of Service Operations. A position he held until he left in 2006 after 20 years of service.

He was quiet and kind. He gave freely and was uncomfortable receiving. His passions included fishing/hunting with friends and breeding, raising, training and showing his beloved dogs. As a parent and grandparent he was a good teacher who led and lived by example.

He spent a lifetime creating fish tales, making tails wag and enriching relationships with friends & family. In the end he looked forward to meeting Jesus and promised to put in a good word for those he was leaving behind.

He is survived by Dorothy Oliver Black, Cindy (David) Warnick, Terry Black, Bob (Debbie) Black, Kathleen (David) Janneck, John (Charu) Black, Christine (Scott) Benson, Juli (Rob) Brookbank, Thomas (Heather) Black, 11 Grandchildren.

I worked for Jim at Commonwealth Electric and also at Long Electric. Jim and I had lunch together and he asked me to work for him in the service department and I accepted. Jim was the best boss I have ever worked for Jim helped me to become a good electrician but also a good man. We have had a lot of laughs over the years Jim was always there to help and guide myself and all who knew him. I will miss Jim and always cherish what he shared and taught me.

I had the fortunate opportunity to work with Jim when he was a BGPD Reserve Police Officer. He was one of the best reserve officers to ever wear the uniform. He had the personality, integrity, and heart that is needed in all police officers. Blessed are the peacemakers, RIP Jim.

Jim and I were neighbors and traveling companions as we were seeking work in Illinois during a construction slowdown. Living and working together Jim was the best friend and companion I could always depend on. I could not have found a kinder soul to share a difficult time in my life.
Rest In Peace Jim.

Jim was in my electrical apprenticeship class. He was always a nice guy. We met later on in business and continued to a very nice person. He was always fare and ethical. He is now with our Lord.
