Linda, I'm so sorry I cannot be there. You know how much John meant to me and to so many other racers. He was incredibly smart, caring, and made a difference in every person's life he touched. He was tireless beyond belief. I will forever be grateful to him for preparing the finest and safest race car for me for my 2000 Indy 500 which ultimately protected me when I had a terrible crash during qualifying. He did so much more to help me maintain my confidence and to rally everyone else around us. His friendship to Dick Simon will last an eternity. Stay strong because that's what he would want you to do. Love, Lyn St. James

When I was younger I watched John Martin from afar at the Speedway. I was always amazed how he maximized the finite resources he had at his disposal with the cars he had.

When I was older I would watch him as he crewed on the teams of others lending the decades of experience and talent that he had to their endeavors.

Later and more recently I stopped him in the garage area and asked him to tell the story to some friends of how he was the chief mechanic on the Javelin Trans Am at MidOhio and the driver wasn't available to qualify the car. He told the powers that be if he put it on the pole he would get to drive it in the race. He did and they did. I always wondered who that mechanic/driver was and I finally got to meet him and hear the story in person. What a thrill.

As we lose people with the passage of years who touched our
lives we look back and see how they enriched us and the people around us. That was the case with John Martin's life. I'm sure his family already knew that. I know I did.

Linda, we share in your loss. You are such a big factor in the wonderful friendship we feel we developed. We value the time we spent at both the Indy 500 and the SVRA Legends Pro-Am weekends with you and John, relaxing and sharing ideas and experiences.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Danna and I send our heartfelt condolences to Linda, Kristen and the family. I first met John in 1972 at Indianapolis and over the past few years he had become an integral part of the Vintage Indy Registry . Words cannot express how deeply John will be missed and the void he leaves in my life, and undoubtedly in countless others. John will forever remain in our thoughts. Michael & Danna Lashmett
