Michael Douglas Cleary

2022 surrounded by loved ones. He was preceded in death by his parents Doug

and June Cleary, his sisters Joan Cleary and Mary Cleary, brother-in-law Bruce

Armstrong, and his wife of 55 years Marcia (King) Cleary.

Michael was born on May 10, 1938 in Indianapolis and was raised in Clermont,

Indiana along with his eight siblings. Michael developed a love of music early on

thanks in part to his mother playing the piano and his parents singing with their

children. He also learned to dance with his sisters and loved to “cut a rug” at

weddings.

He graduated from Cathedral High School in Indianapolis and went on to attend

the University of Illinois where he was very active as a member of the marching

band and was a lifelong proud alumnus.

Michael began his career as an elementary school teacher at St. Malachy in

Brownsburg, Indiana. He went on to complete his master’s degree in education

from Butler University and became an administrator for the Indianapolis Public

School system where he worked for over 35 years. He ended his career as

Principal of Holy Name Catholic School in Beech Grove.

Always the educator, Michael was a voracious reader and owned many books on all

manner of topics. He also enjoyed watching football and loved to attend the

Cathedral football games with his wife, Marcia. Michael was a devout Catholic and

was active in the choir at Holy Name and also volunteered at St. Paul Hermitage in

Beech Grove. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be

missed greatly.

He is survived by his sisters Patricia Cleary, Carol Armstrong, Gerry (Tom) Zeunik,

Catherine Cleary, Janet (Phil) Dodd, brother Thomas (Yvonne) Cleary, daughters

Kathleen (Richard) Boye and Maureen (Scot) Marsh, sons Michael J. (Molly)

Cleary, John (Cindy) Cleary, and Robert (Angela) Cleary and ten grandchildren.

Visitation will be at Little and Sons funeral home in Beech Grove from 5-8 pm on

Friday, April 1st. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 2nd at 11

am in the chapel of Calvary cemetery in Indianapolis.
