Sherman M. "Mike" Gatchell

Greenwood, IN passed away March 1, 2014. Mike was born February 15, 1928 to the late Sherman and Fran Gatchell. In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years Evelyn Ann, his son Chad Michael, and his sister Patricia Pflumn. Mike is survived by his children Cathy Bond, Duff Gatchell, and Renee Wampler, and his sister Rita Spellman, he had six grandchildren: Andrew Bond, Aaron Bond, Kia Wampler, Travis Gatchell,Ryan Wampler and Shelby Gatchell and 7 great grandchildren.

Mike graduated from St. Philip Neri grade school in 1942 and Cathedral High School in 1946 after serviing in the U.S. Navy, he was employed at Indianapolis Power and Light Co. and attended Purdue extension. After 8 years in line construction he transferred to the engineering Department where he spent the next 28 years as an Engineering Technician. After a 4 year stent as President of the Electric Utility Workers Union, he accepted a position as a Labor Relations Generalist in the Humana Relations Department, the position from which he retired in 1990 after 42 years of service at IPL. Mike was also an officer and active member of the IPL Conservation Club, the Trade Shooting League; Men's Club, Golf League, American Legion, the Indiana Counsel of Conservation Clubs, Ducks Unlimited and the Knights of Columbus.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday March 6th, at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Greenwood Catholic Church; 335 S. Meridian St. Visitation will be in the Narthex prior to mass from 10 AM to 11 AM. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Indianapolis. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the S. Vincent DePaul Society at Our Lady of Greenwood Catholic Church or the Knights of Columbus, 695 Pushville Road, Greenwood, IN 46143.
