

Sr. Mary Seghers (formerly Sr. Mary Fortunata), 94, died unexpectedly at Our Lady of Grace Monastery on June 12, 2026. She was born on October 16, 1931 to Edward and Caroline (Goesling) Seghers in Cincinnati, Ohio. She entered Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand, Indiana in 1949 and made her Perpetual Monastic Profession in 1954. Sr. Mary was a founding member of Our Lady of Grace Monastery in Beech Grove, Indiana.
She graduated from Academy Immaculate Conception and went on to receive her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from St. Benedict College and a Master’s Degree in the same area from the University of Notre Dame. Sr. Mary began her teaching career in 1952 and taught at the following schools in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and Diocese of Evansville: Christ the King, Evansville, IN, Sacred Heart, Vincennes, IN, Assumption, Indianapolis, IN, St. Anthony, Clarksville, IN, St. Bartholomew, Columbus, IN, Christ the King, Indianapolis, IN, St. Joseph, Corydon, IN, St. John, Starlight, IN and St. Paul, Tell City, IN. She was the Principal at St. Joe Hill from 1973-1976. After leaving the classroom in 1981, she worked part-time at the Office of Catholic Education and then served as the Activity Director at St. Paul Hermitage until 2000. From 2001 until her retirement in 2015, Sr. Mary served her religious community as the Archivist and was a part-time receptionist at the Benedict Inn Retreat & Conference Center.
Sr. Mary was preceded in death by her parents and four siblings. She is survived by her sister, Charlotte Molitor of Cincinnati, Ohio, several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and her religious community.
Visitation will be held at Our Lady of Grace Monastery on Friday, June 19th from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM. A wake service will be held at 7:00 PM in the Monastery Chapel. Her funeral Mass will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 20th with visitation from 10:00 AM until the funeral.
