Maria Jesus Duarte de Vargas

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of María Jesús Duarte de Vargas, also known by her maiden name, María Jesús Duarte Mejia, and affectionately called Doña Chuy or Chucha. She peacefully passed away on December 28, 2024, at the age of 101. Born on November 27, 1923, in the beautiful region of Michoacán, Mexico, in the small town of Ziquítaro, María Jesús, or "Chucha" as many lovingly called her, lived a life full of love, joy, music, and the beauty of nature.

María Jesús was the beloved daughter of Pablo Duarte Pérez and María Mejía Cortés. She grew up surrounded by her siblings: Rafael, Marta, Pablo, Juana, Luis, Eliseo, and Magdalena. The Duarte Mejía family’s bond was a strong foundation throughout her life, and she carried the love and memories of her family with her always.

From an early age, María Jesús was deeply influenced by her vibrant Mexican heritage, particularly the rich musical traditions of her culture. Music was her lifelong passion, and she shared it generously with all those around her. Doña Chuy had a deep love for traditional Mexican music, especially boleros, rancheras, and corridos, which endeared her to friends and family alike. Whether at family gatherings, local celebrations, or simply in the comfort of her home, she could always be found with a song in her heart and a smile on her face.

In addition to her love for music, María Jesús was also an avid gardener. She found great joy in nurturing plants and watching them bloom. Her garden, especially her beautiful rose bushes, was a reflection of her loving and patient nature, filled with vibrant flowers and greenery that she tended to with great love and care. Her passion for gardening brought peace and beauty into her life and the lives of those around her, much like her love for music.

María Jesús was a devoted and loving grandmother, whose warmth, kindness, and unwavering spirit touched everyone she met. Her generosity, wisdom, and witty personality left a lasting impression, and her memory will forever be cherished by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, as well as the many friends who were blessed to experience her vibrant presence, her musical passion, and her nurturing love for nature.

María Jesús had nine children: Consuelo, Rodolfo, Felipe, Rafael, Maria Guadalupe, Santiago, Bruno, Socorro, and Francisco; and is survived by her nine grandchildren: Saúl, Jesús, René, Néstor Iván, María Consuelo, Marisol, Victor Santiago, Felipe, and Consuelo; her eleven great-grandchildren: Sarena, Selene, Samantha, Melanie Marie, Rick Bruno, Victoria Sophia, Scarlette, Valorie Pepper, Bruno, Aaliyah, and Victoria Sage; and one great-great-grandchild, Delilah.

A viewing for María Jesús will be held on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at Funeraria del Ángel in Bell, California, from 1pm to 6pm, with the rosary starting at 4pm, where family and friends will gather to honor her memory. The funeral mass will be held at 9am on Monday, January 13, 2025, at Sagrado Corazón y Santa María de Guadalupe Catholic Church in Cudahy, CA. A graveside service will follow at 11am at Park Lawn Cemetery in Commerce, CA.

Though Doña Chuy may have left this world, her spirit, her songs, and the beauty of her garden will forever echo in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. May her soul rest in peace.

Con gran tristeza, anunciamos el fallecimiento de María Jesús Duarte de Vargas, también conocida por su apellido de soltera, María Jesús Duarte Mejía, y cariñosamente llamada Doña Chuy o Chucha. Ella falleció tranquilamente el 28 de diciembre de 2024, a la edad de 101 años. Nacida el 27 de noviembre de 1923, en la hermosa región de Michoacán, México, en el pequeño pueblo de Ziquítaro. María Jesús, o "Chucha" como muchos la llamaban con cariño, vivió una vida llena de amor, alegría, música y un apego a la naturaleza.

María Jesús fue hija de Pablo Duarte Pérez y María Mejía Cortés. Creció rodeada de sus hermanos: Rafael, Marta, Pablo, Juana, Luis, Eliseo y Magdalena. El lazo familiar de los Duarte Mejía fue una base sólida a lo largo de su vida, y ella llevó siempre consigo el amor y los recuerdos de su familia.

Desde temprana edad, María Jesús estuvo profundamente influenciada por su vibrante herencia mexicana, particularmente por las ricas tradiciones musicales de su cultura. La música fue su pasión a lo largo de toda su vida, y la compartió generosamente con todos los que la rodeaban. Doña Chuy tenía un profundo amor por la música tradicional mexicana, especialmente los boleros, rancheras y corridos, lo que la hizo muy querida entre sus amigos y familiares. Ya fuera en reuniones familiares, celebraciones locales o simplemente en la comodidad de su hogar, siempre se le podía encontrar con una canción en el corazón y una sonrisa en el rostro.

Además de su amor por la música, María Jesús también era una apasionada jardinera. Encontraba gran alegría en cuidar sus plantas y verlas florecer. Su jardín, especialmente sus hermosos rosales, era un reflejo de su naturaleza cariñosa y paciente, lleno de flores vibrantes y verdor que ella atendía con mucho cuidado y amor. Su pasión por la jardinería trajo paz y belleza a su vida y a la vida de quienes la rodeaban, al igual que su amor por la música.

María Jesús fue una abuela devota y amorosa, cuya calidez, bondad y espíritu inquebrantable tocó a todos los que conoció. Su generosidad, sabiduría y personalidad ingeniosa dejaron una impresión duradera, y su recuerdo será siempre atesorado por sus hijos, nietos, bisnietos, tataranietos y por los muchos amigos que tuvieron el privilegio de experimentar su presencia vibrante, su pasión por la música y su amor por la naturaleza.

María Jesús tuvo nueve hijos: Consuelo, Rodolfo, Felipe, Rafael, Maria Guadalupe, Santiago, Bruno, Socorro y Francisco; y le sobreviven sus nueve nietos: Saúl, Jesús, René, Néstor Iván, María Consuelo, Marisol, Víctor Santiago, Felipe y Consuelo; sus once bisnietos: Sarena, Selene, Samantha, Melanie Marie, Rick Bruno, Victoria Sophia, Scarlette, Valorie Pepper, Bruno, Aaliyah, y Victoria Sage; y una tataranieta, Delilah.

El velorio para María Jesús se llevará a cabo el domingo, 12 de enero de 2025, en Funeraria del Ángel en Bell, California, de 1pm a 6pm, con el rosario comenzando a las 4pm, donde familiares y amigos se reunirán para honrar su memoria. La misa fúnebre se celebrará a las 9am el lunes, 13 de enero de 2025, en la Iglesia Católica Sagrado Corazón y Santa María de Guadalupe en Cudahy, CA. Posteriormente, se llevará a cabo el sepelio en el cementerio Park Lawn en Commerce, CA, a las 11am.

Aunque Doña Chuy haya partido de este mundo, su espíritu, sus canciones y la belleza de su jardín siempre resonarán en los corazones de todos los que la conocieron y la amaron. Que su alma descanse en paz.
