

Agust, “Agi”, was born February 13, 1927 in Sautharkrokur, Iceland to Helgi Olafson and Vali Agustsdottir. He was the eldest of eight children and the only one in the family to immigrate to the United States. Agi received his primary education in Akureyri. He then attended university and medical school in Reykjavik. Agi came to America to attend The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where he completed his residency in Pathology. While attending “The Johns”, Agi met the love of his life Marjorie (that spunky Brit) who he quickly married and began their family. In 1965 Agi came to Houston to join the Baylor faculty which was at that time staffing the Veteran Administration Hospital of Houston. After a few years, Agi went into private practice by joining the pathology group which later became known as Memorial Pathology Consultants.
Agi is preceded in death by his parents, Helgi and Valy, brother Olifur, sister Haldora, and his wife of 47 years Marjorie. He is survived by his daughters Kolbrun Helgason, Thorunn Helgason, granddaughter Barbara Helgason, of Houston; Sigrid Helgason (husband Jim San Filippo), of Dallas; also “adopted” son and incorporated brother to the Helgason family, John Haber, of Houston. He is also survived by bothers Gudlaugur and Haldon of Iceland, Gizur of Denmark, his sisters Herdis and Anna of Iceland, as well as, numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews all of Iceland.
Agi was a member of numerous professional groups including American Medical Association, American Pathology Association, Harris County Medical Association and many others. He was also a member of various social groups; the Houston Forum, the Retired Physicians Society, the English Speaking Union. Agi was an avid supporter of the Arts. He attended and donated to the Houston Grand Opera, the Houston Symphony for greater than forty years.
There will be a Celebration of Life service honoring Dr. Helgason this Monday at 2:00 PM, held at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 5501 Main St, Houston, Tx, 77004.
