Alfonso Arnoldo “Sonny” Ramirez, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2025, at the age of 81. Born on August 19, 1943, in San Benito, Texas, Sonny lived a life defined by devotion—devotion to his family, his faith, and his country.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Ruby Sarabia Ramirez; his daughter, Ana Lisa Ramirez-Chapman (Mike); and his cherished grandchildren, William Alfonso and Elena Karén. He also leaves behind his brother, Gilberto Ramirez (Rosalinda), and his sister, Ana Estela Ramirez Montemayor (Ernesto, d. 2009). He was preceded in death by his parents, Olegario “Lalo” Ramirez and Estella Esparza Ramirez.
Sonny proudly served his country as a Lieutenant, Infantry Unit Commander, in the U.S. Army. His courage and dedication in Vietnam earned him numerous commendations, including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and more. His deep faith carried him through the trials of war, including a moment he often shared—gripping his rosary in a foxhole as enemy soldiers circled nearby, only to miraculously move on without discovering him.
Following his military service, Sonny pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Pan American University after attending North Texas State University. He briefly continued the family business as a Lone Star Beer Distributor in Cameron County before embarking on a career with the Texas Office of the Attorney General, where he served as Manager of the Child Support Division. After 20 years of dedicated service, he retired to embrace his most cherished role—“Papo” to his grandchildren.
Sonny was a man of warmth, humor, and unwavering love. He had an extraordinary ability to connect with people, making everyone feel at ease with his quick wit and genuine kindness. Whether sharing a laugh, offering wisdom, or simply being present, he touched the lives of all who knew him.
He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten. His legacy of love, faith, and service will live on in the hearts of those who had the honor of knowing him.
