Ben attended St. Anthony’s Catholic School in Robstown, Texas from Kindergarten through 5th grade and St. John’s Catholic School in Robstown, Texas from 6th grade through 8th grade. Catholic school education impressed upon Ben his lifelong faith. He graduated from Robstown High School in 1965. He graduated from Del Mar Technical College with an Associate’s Degree in 1967. He was not able to attend his college graduation because Brown and Root wanted him to start work in Houston right away.
Growing up, he enjoyed working with his Uncle Seferino Felan laying bricks. Whataburger was one of his favorite places to eat. When he moved to the Houston area, he would drive across town to Pasadena for a Whataburger. He met Paula in December of 1968 at his cousin Bellanira’s house. Bellanira was one of Paula’s college club friends. Ben and Paula were engaged in February of 1969 and married on June 20, 1969. The two enjoyed bowling on a league at the largest bowling alley in Texas when they lived on the north side of Houston. They were highly involved in their church ministries at St. Monica’s Catholic Church. Ben enjoyed his work designing power plants. Later in his career he was excited to be able to travel to various power plants around the United States to actually see some of his designs in real life. One of Ben’s lifelong goals was to visit as many baseball parks as possible. He made many trips with his family to baseball parks across the country. Ben and Paula enjoyed being season ticket holders with the Sugar Land Skeeters for over 10 years where Ben was able to share his love of baseball.
Ben is preceded in death by his father, Bernardo Flores, Sr. and his mother Rosa Felan Flores. Ben left behind his wife of 54 years, Paula Louise Fulton Flores, his oldest son James Edward Flores, wife Yvonne Hinshaw, and son Weston, his younger son, Daniel Bernardo Flores, and his sister, Esperanza Rios.
