BERTHA GREVSKY KAPLAN, a native Houstonian, was born on July 1, 1912 and passed away on November 2, 2011 at the age of 99. Throughout her life, Bertha was a loving, generous woman who was very active socially and through volunteer work. Even in her 99th year of life, she would still offer to help others. For decades, Bertha was a fixture on the third row at Congregation Beth Yeshurun, and she was active in many other Jewish organizations. She was an Advisor to Barnston BBG and was affectionately known as “Aunt Bertha” to the girls. Bertha was also an active volunteer with Congregation Beth Yeshurun Sisterhood and the Jewish Community Center, at which she was also a full-time employee for many years in the accounting and senior adult departments. In addition, Bertha was a Life Member of Hadassah, B’nai Brith Women, Na ‘Amat, and Women’s American O.R.T. At the age of 65, Bertha fulfilled her dream of becoming a Bat Mitzvah. She also loved to swim and was a “regular” for many years at twice-daily swim exercise classes at the JCC. In her youth, Bertha was valedictorian of her high school graduating class and received a scholarship to Rice University but did not attend in order to work to help support her family. Known as “Mokie” to those close to her, Bertha will be remembered for her frequent laughter, sweet personality, and very giving ways. She is preceded in death by her husband Sam Kaplan, son Elliott Kaplan, and grandson Danny Frank. Bertha is survived by her: daughter Hilda Frank and son-in-law Bobby Frank; granddaughter Karen Frank Hurwitz and husband Ian Hurwitz; granddaughter Nancy Frank Nuzzo and husband Mike Nuzzo; granddaughter Sandy Kaplan Galvan; grandson Edward Brian Kaplan; great-grandchildren Yael Hurwitz, Miranda Hurwitz, Isabelle Nuzzo, Amelia Nuzzo, Evan Galvan, and Craig Galvan; sister Shirley Loeser; brother Chester Grevsky and sister-in-law Eva Grevsky; and numerous nieces and nephews. Bertha’s family is grateful for the care she received the past four years at Seven Acres. For those desiring, contributions may be made in Bertha’s memory to: The Danny Frank Music Fund/HSPVA Friends, 4119 Montrose, Suite 210, Houston, TX 77006. Funeral services will be held at Beth Yeshurun Cemetery, 1037 North Post Oak Road, on November 3rd at 3pm.
