Betty lived her life boldly -- one of the very first women to be licensed as a Broker by the Texas Real Estate Commission. She lived a life of faith -- serving her beloved St. George Orthodox Church on the Parish Council and as a founding member of the Ladies Altar Society. And she lived a life of service -- as National Vice President of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Women of North America, lifelong member of the L'Entasar Club of Texas and the Southern Federation of Syrian Lebanese American Clubs, the National Secretary for ALSAC and active in fundraising for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Betty graduated from Houston's Jeff Davis High School and was attending classes at the University of Houston and working in accounting at a Mission Petroleum, a local oil services company, when she set her sights on real estate, one of the first women in Texas to do so. Betty met and later married Abraham "Abe" George Murr on October 11, 1954, and together they had six children: Marc Douglas Murr, Esq., Marilyn Gay Murr, M.D., Marietta Murr Dauria, Madelyn Jean Murr, Miriam Murr Biskamp, Esq., and George Bashier Murr, Esq.
While raising and educating a family of six rising stars, Betty and Abe enjoyed travel to European capitals and jitterbug dancing out on the town. They were the first ones out on the dance floor and the last ones closing it down. Betty was a tenacious, loyal friend to all fortunate enough to know her. She was endlessly supportive and notoriously proud of her children and grandchildren. She was the most deeply loving and faithful mother.
In later years, her one true love was her vivacious little toddler grandson, Milad Abraham George Murr, whom she simply adored and who could often be seen dancing with her, the apple of her eye. There will never be another like her, as one of her children was fond of saying, "after God made her, he broke the mold." She will be missed dearly.
