We are sad to note the passing of Carolyn Brown Meigs on January 1, 2014. She was born April 2, 1923, in Troy, New York. She graduated from high school in Brownsville, Texas and later received her Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from Texas State College for Women, which is now Texas Women’s University, in Denton, Texas. Carolyn later received her MBA from the University of Iowa in 1975.
It was in Denton that she met her husband William R. (Bill) Meigs while he was in the army stationed at Arlington, Texas. In 1945, after WWII, Bill and Carolyn were married in Cuba and had two children, Peter W. Meigs and Stephanie Meigs Howerton. They lived in Cuba until the political situation forced them to leave in 1960.
After a short stay in Florida, they moved to Barranquilla, Colombia for three years, after which they moved to Houston, Texas; then to Chicago, Illinois; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Vinton, Iowa after which they finally settled in Danville, Virginia for a long and enjoyable retirement. Health issues in 2008 finally sent both of them back to Houston, Texas to live near their daughter, Stephanie Howerton. Bill, Carolyn’s husband of 65 years, passed away on June 6, 2010.
Carolyn worked for many years as the award winning editor of the employee magazine for Alliant Energy, the electric utility in Iowa. She also worked as a public information coordinator for the nuclear power plant the company was building. She retired in 1988.
