OBITUARY

Diane W Newman

November 28, 1931July 7, 2019

Diane Newman, 87, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2018.

She leaves her sons, Marc Kraker Newman and Harris Stanely Newman; their wives, Denice Snow and Bonnie Robin Newman; and two grandchildren, Peri Ellen Newman and Jacob Weisz Newman; and many close friends. Born in Tyler, Texas, the daughter of Herman and Sophie Weisz, she was a longtime resident of Houston, Texas. In her early years, she was stricken with scarlet fever and lost much of her eyesight. After graduating from San Jacinto High School in 1948, she attended Rice University. Despite the limitations with her eyesight, Diane earned a bachelor's degree in English from Rice University in 1952. She met her beloved husband, Charles Davis Newman, at a JCC event, and they were married in 1954 at Temple Beth Israel. In 1955, Chuck, Diane, and their new son Marc left Biloxi, Miss. - where Chuck was stationed - to live in Syracuse, NY. Diane, being a Houston girl, did not like New York winters. After a move to Buffalo, NY, she convinced Chuck to move back to Houston, where he found work with the newly formed Texas Instruments. She worked tirelessly as Chuck’s wife and caretaker of her two sons and her mother Sophie. When her mother-in-law and other family members became elderly, they moved to Houston and Diane lovingly cared for them as well. For a short period, Diane taught elementary classes at public schools. She also volunteered in many roles for the Sisterhood of Congregation Beth Israel and the local chapter of Hadassah. She was married to her loving husband for more than 62 years.

A funeral service was held July 9, 2019 at the Beth Israel Cemetery on West Dallas, with private burial.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in honor of Diane W. Newman to Congregation Beth Israel Sisterhood fund 5600 N. Braeswood, Houston, Texas 77096.
