Don Caspary, 76, of Houston, TX passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 27, 2025 at home, following a courageous battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Though the disease slowly took his body, it never diminished his spirit, intellect, or wit. He faced this devastating illness with remarkable grace, resilience, and an unyielding sense of humor that was a comfort to all who knew him.
Papa was born on August 16, 1949 in San Antonio, TX, although spent most of his life in New Orleans, LA. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1967. He went on to earn a degree from Loyola University in New Orleans in 2004, and had a successful career as a private investigator following his time in oil and gas.
A lover of puttering around the house, riding his motorcycle, and bossing everyone around to put things back where they belong, his infectious laugh and positive outlook on life left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Even as ALS progressed, Papa found new ways to engage with the world, continuing to use a text to speech app on his phone to communicate, as well as connect with friends on Facebook, and support his LSU Tigers.
Papa’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his spouse of 45 years, Shelley Caspary; children, Lauren Caspary, and Court Caspary and wife, Kelly Caspary, and grandchildren, Michael, Charlotte, and Dawn Caspary. He will be forever loved and dearly missed by all.
The family would like to thank the compassionate caregivers and support team from the entire ALS team at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Houston, TX for their incredible support and guidance through this journey. Dr. Orengo, Dr. Bujarski, Richel Aliboso, Greg Tracey, and Kristen Anthony, we truly could not have done this without you all. Caregivers: Brenda Toussaint, Phillipa West, and Mackcean Hawthorne for taking such great care of Papa.
In his honor, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Team Gleason in New Orleans in honor of Papa to support the search for a cure for this terrible disease. NO WHITE FLAGS!
A celebration of Papa’s s life will be held at a later date.
