Douglas Carl Hoffman

Douglas C. Hoffman was born July 25, 1942, in Rochester, New York to the late Virginia Lipinski Hoffman and Robert Hoffman. He died quietly at his home on Monday, October 24, 2011. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife Mary, his daughter Amy, brother Robert Hoffman and wife Eleanor, brother Bruce Hoffman, nieces and nephews Damien, Mary, Olivia, Rocky, Mark, and Mathew.

Doug received his BA degree at St. Bernard’s College in New York. He earned his master’s degree at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy. He completed his doctoral studies at the Catholic University in Washington, DC. Doug was a master of the classics and was fluent in at least seven languages.

Doug worked with the Diocese of Rochester, NY from 1967 until 1984, and his last assignment was chaplain of Cornell University. From 1984 until 2001, Doug worked in the insurance industry for Sanus/New York Life and also for Aetna Health as Vice President of Nylcare 65. In the fall of 2002, Doug began teaching philosophy and classical languages at St. Thomas Episcopal School. He served as head of the Classics Department from 2002 until 2011.

He was much loved and respected by his students, fellow faculty members, family, and many friends. He was known for his kindness and generosity. Doug was considered a Renaissance man who had a way of educating those in his lives in and out of the classroom. He will be greatly missed by his wife and daughter, as well as anyone who he encountered in this life.

Doug, a member of Christ Church Cathedral for many years, will have his memorial held there at 10:00am on Saturday, October 29, 2011. Following the Eucharist will be the interment of his ashes at the Cathedral Columbarium. St. Thomas’ Episcopal pipe band will perform in his honor at the service.

The family has requested that donations be made to the Lonergan Institute at Christ Church Cathedral, the Beacon at Christ Church Cathedral, or St. Thomas Episcopal School in his name.
