Douglas (“Doug”) McArthur Nilsen, 82, passed away on February 25, 2025, in Houston, Texas after a battle with cancer. Born on April 10, 1942, in Beaumont, Texas, Doug lived a full life marked by his love for family, family, travel, movies, and Star Trek.
Doug attended school in Beaumont and graduated from French High School in 1960. He continued his education at Lamar University, where he studied Chemical Engineering and computers. His passion for engineering led him to a long and successful career with Tenneco as a Chemical Engineer and Data Base designer. His work took him across the globe, where he specialized in developing programs to control manufacturing equipment. One of his favorite assignments was in Saint Dizier, France, where he spent many years working and forming lasting friendships with the locals. His daughter Amy Nilsen Scaff joined him for several trips over the years. He cherished his time there and often spent weekends exploring Paris, even giving tours to friends who would come to Paris for a visit.
After high school, Doug served in the Army, an experience that instilled in him a deep sense of discipline and adventure. During his time in the Army he worked in dentistry and also riflery.
His love for exploration extended beyond his professional travels—he enjoyed taking long road trips across the United States, embracing the open road and discovering new places along the way. He took multiple road trips to the West Coast-a place he loved.
Doug found immense joy in spending time with his grandsons, David Colton Scaff and Connor Lee Scaff. In recent years, he lived next door to them, creating countless cherished memories together. He shared a special bond with David over their mutual enjoyment of Judge Judy episodes and spent time with Connor searching for unique currencies from his travels. He loved going to movies with his grandsons and his daughter Amy. When Amy was younger, Sundays were reserved for movie outings and lunch-a tradition they both treasured.
A devoted fan of Star Trek and Dallas Cowboys fan he also loved top play Blackjack, Doug had a sharp mind and a love for entertainment that brought joy to those around him. His warmth and kindness extended to many close relationships throughout his life. He is survived by his daughter Amy Nilsen and her husband Peter Scaff; grandsons David Colton Scaff and Connor Lee Scaff; nieces Alma Wellons and Tina Wellons Hart; and Lori Webber, a close friend of over 50 years. He was predeceased by his sister Patsy Wellons, brother-in-law Jesse Wellons, and nephew Dusty Wellons.
Doug has joined his best friend Herman Weber who passed in January. There is no doubt that they are making plans for the next New Years Eve and watching over all the people they love.
To honor Doug’s life, a memorial gathering will be held on March 22, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM at Joyce’s Seafood Restaurant in Houston (6415 San Felipe St., Houston, TX 77057). The family invites friends and loved ones to join them for a small lunch celebration of Doug’s life. Those planning to attend are encouraged to reach out to the family.
Doug will be remembered as a caring person who embraced life’s adventures with enthusiasm. His memory will live on through the stories shared by those who knew him best.
