Elizabeth J. Petcosky was born on October 15, 1923, to Alfred William Zimmerman and Ella Wilhelmine Pagel Zimmerman in Taylor, Texas. She peacefully went home to her Heavenly Father on Sunday, June 2, 2024, with Betsy Elenbaas and Cooper by her side.
Elizabeth began her career in Bastrop, Texas, where she met her soldier, Joseph Petcosky, at a USO dance. They married on October 26, 1943. While Joseph was away during WWII, their son, Joseph Blake Petcosky, was born. The young family reunited at the end of the war in 1945. Sadly, Joseph passed away suddenly in 1978, and their beloved son passed away in 2014. Family meant everything to Elizabeth.
Elizabeth was known for her down-home Southern cooking, sharing recipes like chicken and dumplings and various beans from her head and heart. She cherished her daily routine of bacon, eggs, and coffee, except on Good Friday. She enjoyed gardening, tending to her roses, collecting teddy bears, and her love for Ralph Lauren fashion. Elizabeth also enjoyed trips to the casino with her St. Thomas More friends.
Her faith, family, and country were paramount in her life. She believed in always doing the right thing and lived by that principle. Elizabeth shared an endless and unconditional love with little doggie Cooper, affectionately calling him "Stinky."
Elizabeth was a private and independent person. Her caregiver Betsy said, "It was an honor and privilege to be her caregiver and friend in her later years, along with our dear friend, Delia Nunez. We are also deeply grateful for our nurse, Elizabeth Williams from Windsor Hospice, who was so caring and supportive during the last three months of this incredible journey."
Elizabeth lived a long life of 100 years, 7 months, and 17 days. She often remarked, "Life is short." She taught us many lessons and, though she left a small and quiet footprint, she made a lasting impression on our hearts.
She will be laid to rest beside her husband Joseph at Houston National Cemetery on Thursday, June 13, 2024 at 1:00 pm.
Elizabeth is survived by her grandson, Nicholas Petcosky of Houston, Texas.
