Eva was born on May 21, 1925 in Vienna, Austria to Augusta Zerner and Leopold Oppenheim. She grew up in Vienna until 1938 when she moved to London, England aboard the Kinder Transport train to escape the Nazi invasion of Vienna. She became a ward of an elderly English couple, had to temporarily change her last name to Osborne, and surrender her Austrian passport. In England she completed her education and worked as an army nurse until the end of World War II.
In 1946 she moved to New York City because she found out that both of her parents had survived World War II and were living in New York. That same year, Eva met the love of her life, Ervin Graubard, a refugee from Czechoslovakia living in Barranquilla, Colombia who happened to be visiting New York during a business trip.
On January 24, 1950, Eva and Ervin got married and started their life together in Barranquilla. Together they had 5 children: Jacqueline, Michael, Carlos, Susie and Robert. They encouraged and supported all their children to achieve higher education and saw each one immigrate to the United States to achieve this. In 1981, they followed and took up residency in Temple, Texas where Eva worked as a VA nurse. In 1997 she retired and moved to Houston to be close to her children.
Eva's greatest joy in life was her family. She was a devoted wife to her husband for 34 years, and together they raised their children, instilling in them the values of love, integrity, and resilience. She cherished moments spent with her children and grandchildren.
Eva was preceded in death by her parents Augusta and Leopold Oppenheim, her husband Ervin Graubard, brother and sister-in-law Charles and Carol Osborne, and son-in-law Max Monheit. She is survived by her daughter Jacqueline Monheit, her son and daughter-in-law Michael and Lisa Graubard, son and daughter-in-law Carlos and Reina Graubard, daughter and son-in law Susan and Melvin Cweren, son and daughter-in-law Robert and Lucy Graubard and grandchildren Jocelyn and Sarah Graubard, Rachel and Ervin Graubard, and Caroline and Alex Cweren.
Eva will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of love, kindness, and compassion will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
May Eva Lia Graubard rest in peace, knowing she was loved and cherished by many.
