Fred Mandel was an energetic, enthusiastic man who devoted his life to science and to his family.Early in his career, while working at the University of Rochester and Rice University, Fred made seminal contributions to the nascent field of computational chemistry. As a professor at the University of Cincinnati and at The Upjohn Company, Fred investigated mechanisms of calcium regulation in the heart for the development of anti-arrhythmic drugs.Fred loved sports. A competitive amateur athlete, Fred played soccer, volleyball, and tennis, and had an unwavering excitement for life.Most recently, he translated his enthusiasm into his teaching of mathematics at Elkins High School. His is survived by his wife Elena and his two daughters, Sasha and Nina.
