

Gabriel Eduardo Hoyos, PhD. M.D. died on June 28, 2015 in Houston, Texas. He was born on December 9, 1947 in Bogotá, Colombia. Gabriel is survived by his daughter Christina Hoyos Ebrahim, his granddaughter Sofia Fatima Ebrahim, his siblings Carmen Hoyos, Luis Hernán Hoyos, and Constanza Hoyos, and the family golden retriever Lila. He will be forever missed by many other relatives and friends.
Gabe, as he was known to his family and colleagues, attended the University of Texas at Arlington from 1967-1975; he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, two Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering, and a PhD in Electrical Engineering. Gabe´s doctorial dissertation Fast Transient Response of Novel Peltier Junctions contributed to current-day smart missile development technology.
Gabe graduated from medical school at the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1979, and completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Gabe opened his private practice with Arthur Faris M.D. in 1983 and with Anthony Chavez M.D. in 1995. Gabe instructed Residents as an Associate Professor at Baylor College Of Medicine. During the last 13 years of his life, Gabe worked as a Hospitalist at The Woman´s Hospital of Texas.
He volunteered his time with the Houston Zoo and Texas A&M in a co-operative effort to assist with the health care of their animals. He performed a hysterectomy on an endangered monkey in an effort to salvage her genetic material. He responded to an emergency call from the zoo to save the life of a bear and her cubs who experienced extreme complications during labor.
Gabe married Joy Lorraine Lefler in Bogotá, Colombia in 1971. They raised their daughter Christina in Houston, Texas. Gabe was always recognized by his trademark suspenders and good humor.
A celebration of Gabriel´s life will be held at Earthman Bellaire Funeral Home, at 6700 Ferris Street, Bellaire, Texas 77401 on Tuesday July 7th, 2015 at 6pm-8pm. Funeral Mass will be held at Saint Thomas More Church, located at 10330 Hillcroft Street, Houston, Texas 77096 on Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at 10am-12pm, with lunch and refreshments to follow.
